Homestead Sawmill Limited is a small, well-established logging and sawmill company based in Sundridge, Ontario that offers its employees a relaxed and engaging environment, variety of work, products and projects.
The Company: Homestead Sawmill is a forest management and harvesting company that, along with our subsidiary Tim Bryson Forestry Services, provides logs of various species to mills and customers of various sizes, with a commitment to sustainability through low impact logging. We buy logs and standing timber, complete road work and help with property development and recreational development and are expanding into value added. We also sell firewood to individuals, and through our sister company Homestead, provide custom sawmilling, rough cut lumber, live-edge lumber, as well as logs and timbers.

The Location: We are in beautiful Sundridge, Ontario. Sundridge is a small, near-north town that is very family friendly and offers access to several outdoor activities. Located on the shores of the Lake Bernard (the largest freshwater lake without an island), Sundridge is in a picturesque area with much to offer.
Key Responsibilities:
· Sawmill – Manage the mill including:
o Develop map and oversee lumber piling and use of mill yard space
o Maintaining logs, lumber and mill inventory
o Lumber order fulfillment - liaise between customer, mill and office to complete sales (taking orders, filling orders, arranging pickup/delivery and handling payment)
o Monitor safety and fire
o Deal with byproduct
o Expand mill operations
· Shop– Manage the shop and shop office including:
o Work between drivers and mechanics to understand what work needs to be done on vehicles and schedule repairs ensuring completion
o Budget for maintenance and track costs
o Oversee and track management of scrap and parts inventory
o Manage outdoor wood furnace loading schedule
o Coordinate and schedule 258a location facilities repairs, maintenance, cleaning and manage parking
· Fleet Management
o Ensure compliance – CVOR compliance, vehicle checklists, insurance, licensing, safety requirements, maintenance logs and logbooks
o Monitor and schedule fuel deliveries
o Manage drivers – maintain job ad for AZ drivers, hire up to 3 drivers and assess performance, may require brief periods of filling in for drivers or going to get parts when needed
o Oversee function of radios and cell boosters; eventually add dash cams, GPS, etc.
o Develop parking map, reserve parking
o Office management
· Project Management – Oversee projects to expand operations:
o Safety capabilities at shop
o Set up 40’ mill
o Kiln to be attached to outdoor furnace
o Setting up South River Yard to transition into new shop (hydro, sprinkler system, treelength wood processor, truck garage)
o Transition existing ship into mill works
o Expand into municipal projects
o Expand into infrastructure projects, bid on, tender out and supervise infrastructure projects
Requirements:
· Customer service skills – excellent communication and interpersonal skills are needed to interact with customers.
· Leadership and management skills – ability to lead, motivate and manage a team is essential.
· Problem-solving – ability to diagnose issues, find solutions and manage unexpected challenges is important.
· Financial knowledge – understanding financial statements, budgeting and profitability.
· Compliance – staying up to date on industry regulations and safety standards is a must.
· Adaptability – ability to adapt to new technologies and procedures is important.
· Communication – ability to effectively communicate with mechanics, sawmill employees, customers, and office staff is essential. Ability to write staff reports and communicate tasks effectively are vital.
· Industry knowledge – knowledge of vehicle maintenance, trucking, logging and/or lumber is considered an advantage.
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday (8:00-4:00), on-site – may need to do some travel around the area – possibility to work from home on occasion.
Compensation: $55,0000-$75,000 depending on skillset and experience
Holidays, benefits and project completion bonus’ available.
