Position Summary:
The Facility for Electron Microscopy Research (FEMR) at McGill University is seeking an Electron Microscopy Technician. The Electron Microscopy (EM) Technician will provide electron microscopy- services to FEMR clients, mainly in the area of microtomy and traditional electron microscopy services. This position provides essential support to academic, governmental, and industrial/commercial investigators who rely on core facility services to conduct their funded research.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
The Facility for Electron Microscopy Research (FEMR) at McGill University is seeking an Electron Microscopy Technician. The Electron Microscopy (EM) Technician will provide electron microscopy- services to FEMR clients, mainly in the area of microtomy and traditional electron microscopy services. This position provides essential support to academic, governmental, and industrial/commercial investigators who rely on core facility services to conduct their funded research.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Process tissue samples assigned for the facility Manager using conventional electron microscopy techniques, including fixation, resin embedding, staining and immuno-electron microscopy.
- Process tissue samples using high-pressure freezer and automatic freeze substitution device, critical point dryer, carbon coater, sputter coater, and other ancillary equipment.
- Sample sectioning using ultramicrotomy and cryo-ultramicrotomy techniques.
- Assist FEMR clients with visualization of samples in the electron microscope.
- Assist with training of students and other researchers in these techniques and in the use of the microscope.
- Participates in the development and implementation of unit procedures and work methods.
- Perform basic laboratory maintenance tasks such as supplies restocking, maintain inventory, glassware washing and autoclaving.
- Compiles experimental and analytical data, prepares reports and conduct literature research,
- Participate in meetings with clients for project and experimental approach discussions.
- Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, cellular biology or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
- Experience in an electron microscopy research laboratory.
- Possess knowledge on fundamental cell biology and biochemistry including buffer preparation.
- Posses basic knowledge of how to work in a laboratory environment.
- Able to perform in compliance with all requirements, regulations, and laws.
- Able to maintain high standards with the work being performed and maintain awareness of trends and influences.
- Able to perform the indicated laboratory procedures independently.
- Able to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
- Able to independently carry out routine and maintenance procedures.

- Able to organize sample and project logbooks by using Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access.

- Able to understand written information and listen attentively to verbal and non-verbal cues that lead to a deeper understanding.
- Able to work cooperatively with others and demonstrates professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others.
- Able to interact pleasantly and positively with others, meet clients' expectations, and provide follow-up with clients.
