The Role
Northwestern Polytechnic is looking for patient driving instructors to teach our learners how to drive Class 1 and/or Class 3 commercial vehicles. The driving instructor's responsibilities include planning and delivering lessons that promote learners theoretical and applied driving skills.
Continuing Education is currently seeking instructors to teach the following:
- Class 1 Learning Pathway
- Tier 2: Core Learning Program
- Tier 3: Competence Building Program
- Class 3 to 1 Experience and Equivalency
- Class 3 Driver Training
- Alberta Air Brakes (Q Endorsement)
Responsibilities
- Driver Instruction & Vehicle Safety
- Deliver Class 1 Learning Pathway training (Tier 2, Tier 3, Experience and Equivalency) and Class 3 driver training.
- Teach vehicle parts, functions, and on-road regulations.
- Maintaining vehicle control during emergency vehicle situations.
- Ensure vehicles are inspected, fueled, clean, secure, and maintained before and after use.
- Report mechanical issues and equipment maintenance needs.
- Ensure proper use and care of institutional vehicles.
- Enforce institutional, provincial, and OH&S safety standards.
- Instructional Delivery & Assessment
- Deliver both classroom/theory and practical/road training.
- Prepare lesson plans, instructional materials, and assessments.
- Adapt instruction to diverse learner needs and learning styles.
- Administer and grade knowledge and skills evaluations.
- Provide constructive feedback to build learner confidence.
- Compliance & Record Keeping
- Maintain accurate records of training hours, competencies, attendance, and student progress.
- Ensure compliance with Alberta Transportation and other regulatory requirements.
- Collaboration & Professionalism
- Coordinate with Continuing Education staff for scheduling and equipment use.
- Contribute to curriculum updates and program evaluation to align with industry standards.
- Exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Show flexibility to teach evenings, weekends, or intensive programs.

The successful candidate must possess:
- Valid Class 1 driver's license with at least three years professional driving experience
- Certification as a licensed Driving Instructor in Alberta (or willingness to obtain)
- Acceptable driving abstract (no more than 6 demerits, and no license suspensions within the preceding two-year period)
- Thorough knowledge of the Traffic Safety Act, Provincial Hours of Service, Cargo Securement, Weights & Dimensions, and Pre-trip Inspection
- Criminal Record Check may be requested prior to hire
The successful candidate will be provided internal training to achieve Alberta Transportation Professional Driver Training Instructor status if required.
