Director of Programming

Musicworks Canada
Calgary, Alberta
Full time

Objectives for fulfilling the role of Director of Programming.

The following information lays out structures and methods that a successful Programming

Director will need to implement. The needed programs will be executed in partnership between Music

Works Canada, the operators, and the music teachers. The program laid out below is a synopsis of

Music Works Canada culture and is designed to help with student retention, teacher retention, and

promote a strong return on retail revenues.

The development of tools and analytics will be used to establish and maintain robust

long term growth for Music Works Canada.

Music Works Canada culture.

As Music Works Canada we want parents investing in the organization, and the organization including,

Music Works Canada, the operators, and their teachers focused on the long term success of the student.

Music Works Canada teaches music as a language.

- Implementation and promotion of Music Works Canada culture.

- Music is a language, and Music Works Canada will teach that language in a clear and

knowable manner.

- Communication with both students and parents in a manner that emphasizes

positive development of the student in both long term planning and feedback

on a lesson by lesson basis.

- Collaboration with operators and instructors.

- The development of analytic tools that would assist Music Works Canada, and it’s

operators in strengthening retention of both students and instructors.

- Music Works Canada will provide instructors with a curriculum that is supported

by the materials that Music Works Canada retail stores sell.

- Aiding instructors in understanding and utilizing materials that have been

selected by Music Works Canada for use in lessons.

Structure of Lesssons

- Consistency of lesson structure.

- Music Works Canada will provide instructors with a consistent curriculum and

instrument specific plan that is supported by materials that Music Works Canada sells.

- Long term arc of skills progression.

- This is the long term lesson structure that takes any student from where

they’re at and plots a progression of skills built on the Music Works of Canada culture.

- Short term arc of skills progression.

- This is the planning that each instructor does on a per-lesson basis that organizes

the student's development with respect to the Long Term arc of skills progression

- The instructor needs to be flexible in meeting the student where they are at on a

given day.

Progression of Lessons

- Music as a language

- Music Works Canada is unique in that it teaches music as a language.

That language has two primary facets.

- Theory of music

This is the first facet component of music as a language, it shows

how music is built and enables the musician to move from

one music instrument to another music instrument.

- Instrumental theory

This is the second facet of music as a language. Instrumental theory

is how a specific instrument is used to implement the theory of music.

It involves both technique of playing an instrument and how music theory

is implemented with that instrument.

Student Retention

- Student retention is a critical factor for the business.

- A high retention rate ensures stable revenue.

- A high retention rate will result in increased business through referrals from

existing clientele.

- Student autonomy in music choice

- The use of limited choice in material, guided by the instructor. This will give

the student a sense of control over their development as a musician. This choice

structure is also used in a broader sense when the student is selecting material

for a recital.

- Meet the student where they are at on a given day.

- All students learn at different rates, abilities, and modes. Understanding and flexing

their lessons to accomodate their needs helps them to achieve goals and to feel

a genuine sense of achievement.

- Meeting the student where they are at is an important aspect of being successful

when working with students who experience learning disabilities.

- Constant evaluation.

- The instructor maintains progress notes to assist in lesson planning and to spot issues which may be developing over a longer time frame. These notes are should remain internal to the instructor and are not considered to be for the student.

- Strengths-Based Assessment.

- This is used to determine how to best approach material and skills

development. Students have varied modal styles of learning (aural, visual, tactile

are common modes and may be strongly present individually or in combination).

- Watching for student focus changes and adapting the lesson to maintain interest.

- Instructors need to be aware of student strengths and teaching the student by

building on their strengths.

- Communication with the Student and Parents.

- Utilizing insights gained from Strengths-Based Assessment, summarize and

then communicate with the student and parents using guidelines:

- Focus on where they’re making gains instead of where

they need to make improvements. This keeps communications on a

very positive level and helps inform the students where they are growing.

- Practicing at home utilizing structures that are consistent with the

student’s strengths.

- Movement through material to promote the perception of progress.

- This is one of the more critical aspects of teaching. If the student is stuck on

a technique that one piece is using, and this isn’t resolving within a couple of

lessons then it will help to move to a new piece that uses the same technique.

This helps the student to feel like they are progressing. The instructor should

not frame the move as a negative, nor should they say that we are moving due

to the student having a problem. Rather the instructor should just move to a

new piece in the same manner that they would when moving forward naturally.

Qualifications:

- ARCT or comparable, plus track record of effective teaching and student retention.

- emphasis on RCM Theory, plus at least one instrument proficiency.
