Our office is seeking a Design Manager to be based in our Toronto office with a Civil background to join our team. This position will be to work on projects for Rail transit infrastructure (High Speed, Metro, LRT, streetcars, subway extensions etc.-candidates must be local to be considered)

Responsibilities of the job:

  • Assist Project Manager in all tasks related with the development of construction documents required for a transit Project
  • Monitor Design Schedule, track deliverable dates and prepare look-ahead schedule for distribution
  • Assist discipline leads to identify design issues and prepare RFIs to send to the client as required
  • Manage Design Subconsultant agreements, deliverables, and invoicing process
  • Track all Project associated costs related with Design hours progress tracking, estimating
  • Work with Discipline Leads to ensure that design solutions are fully coordinated with other disciplines and contract requirements by chairing meetings, preparing sketches, tracking deliverables
  • Work with BIM and CAD personnel to develop drawings, sketches and support documents when required
  • Track and Monitor Design Interfaces – Internal, External with Client and External with Third Parties
  • Review all contract requirements and ensure Compliance
  • Participate in Change Management process and assist Commercial Manager when required.
  • Design Issues Tracking and Issues Resolution
  • Consult with Project Document Control Manager and ensure procedures are being adhered to and key documents uploaded to Client are compliant
  • Review Project and Company procedures for Design Quality Management and track performance
  • Position requires attendance at internal and external meetings and keep meeting minute records
  • Candidate should be familiar with local design codes, drawing preparation standards etc.
  • Research into available design standards, requirements, literature to support design decision making

Requirements of the position:

  • More than 10 years’ experience as Engineer (Civil or Structural) or Architect, including alignment (mandatory) familiar with various Ontario-market clients' design standards
  • Experience as a Design Manager or Assistant Project Manager is mandatory along with having local project experience in the Toronto area
  • P.Eng. or OAA registration is an asset
  • Must have experience in detailed design coordination
  • PMP training is an asset
  • Legally able to work in the greater Toronto area presently
  • High skills in Inroads or Power Rail Track are mandatory
  • Sound technical/business judgment in the evaluation, organization, management, and experience of design activities
  • Able to develop plans, specifications, technical notes & calculations, etc., with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop non-standard solutions
  • Ability to work in a multi-disciplined team
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively with management, coworkers, clients, vendors, partners, contractors, etc.
  • Willingness to learn, develop and apply new techniques, standards, and processes
  • Willingness to take on additional tasks as needed
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communication skills
  • Excellent analytical and technical writing skills, excellent organizational, time management and critical thinking skills
  • Fluency in English, both written and verbal is critical
