Reporting to the Director, Legal Services (Clinical) and working with the CAMH Legal Services (Clinical) team, the Consent and Capacity Board Coordinator will be responsible for supporting Consent and Capacity Board (“CCB”) hearing processes at CAMH.

The Consent and Capacity Board Coordinator acts as the central point of contact for CCB hearings, and manages relationships with key internal and external stakeholders (including the CCB, legal counsel, other psychiatric hospitals, and the Psychiatric Patient Advocacy Office) to ensure smooth communication between all parties on CCB hearing matters.

The CCB Coordinator liaises with physicians, legal counsel, and the CCB regarding the scheduling of CCB hearings. Responsibilities include: day to day handling of hearing applications, hearing scheduling and related processes (filing and calendar management), delivery of hearing materials, and coordinating with CAMH legal counsel. The successful candidate will also support the development of resource materials for physicians. This position includes day-to-day administrative tasks, as well as larger project work.

The successful candidate will work closely with CAMH Legal Counsel (Clinical), clinical teams and physicians, and CAMH’s Health Records staff in the coordination of services that support CCB hearing processes. This role supports a workplace that embraces diversity, encourages teamwork and complies with all applicable and regulatory requirements. This position is located at 100 Stokes St.

Key Accountabilities

  • Liaise with the Consent and Capacity Board, CAMH clinicians, and patient counsel to ensure timely scheduling of CCB hearings
  • Facilitate exchange of exhibits for CCB hearings with the CCB and patient counsel
  • Design and update educational resources for CAMH clinicians on mental health law and CCB proceedings
  • Develop, evaluate, and report on indicators to assess trends in CCB hearings and results
  • Identify matters appropriate for escalation to CAMH Legal Counsel
  • Support relationship with the Psychiatric Patient Advocacy Office as it relates to their provision of service in a psychiatric hospital
  • Collaborate with CAMH’s Health Records Department to ensure compliance with legislative procedures
  • Oversee and update relevant CAMH policies and procedures
  • Maintain tracking systems and oversee orders to support and ensure compliance
  • Participate in a community of practice with partner psychiatric hospitals to share resources and best practices in relation to CCB and other related matters

Job Requirements

  • Legal assistant or law clerk qualification, with experience working in a legal office, tribunal, or health care setting and supporting litigation processes
  • Experience in a coordinator, health administration, operations management or other related role is an asset
  • Experience or familiarity with the Consent and Capacity Board and relevant legislation (incl. Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act) is an asset.
  • Strong negotiation, interpersonal, communication and relationship management skills required
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to respond to complex and sensitive issues
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, prioritize, align and oversee multiple projects, with flexibility to adapt and manage competing daily demands and changing priorities
  • Strong time management skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Experience dealing with various professionals (health care providers, lawyers, etc.) and diverse internal and external stakeholders (including patients)
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal direct supervision, and as a member of a dynamic team
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to find the best approach or solution to highly diverse challenges
  • Excellent judgment, tact, and diplomacy
  • Proficiency in the use of computer software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook are required.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) and/or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.
