Job Description: Communication & Development Coordinator (Temporary – Maternity Leave Coverage)
At the Wood Buffalo Food Bank, our mission is to provide the resources and education necessary to ensure food security for all citizens in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo—including Fort McMurray and its surrounding rural communities.
Position Summary:
The Communication & Development Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the organization’s communications plan, brand standards, fund development initiatives, and supporting the volunteer management program in coordination with the Volunteer Liaison.
Please Note: This is a temporary maternity leave coverage position for up to 18 months.
Key Responsibilities:
Communications & Public Awareness
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop and manage a comprehensive communications strategy and calendar
- Draft and distribute media releases; coordinate media buying, sponsorships, and advertising
- Manage the organization’s online presence, including website and social media platforms
- Work with external partners to develop communication materials (e.g., annual report, brochures)
- Plan and execute awareness events like Hunger Awareness Week and World Food Day
- Provide writing and editing support for internal and external communications
- Oversee newsletters and digital channels to engage stakeholders
Branding
- Support efforts to raise awareness of and maintain the integrity of the organization’s brand
- Assist in the development and enforcement of brand standards
- Utilize media opportunities to promote the Wood Buffalo Food Bank
Fund Development
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to support fundraising and public engagement goals
- Identify and research new funding opportunities, including grants, sponsorships, and community partnerships
- Strengthen relationships with existing donors and partners to foster deeper collaboration
- Support strategies to broaden the donor pool and build legacy funding opportunities
- Assist in donor stewardship and maintain alignment with the Imagine Canada Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code
Community Relations & Advocacy
- Prepare and distribute a monthly newsletter for stakeholders, funders, volunteers, and the public
- Attend community meetings to provide updates on programs and services
- Represent the organization at events and advocacy initiatives, as needed
Volunteer Coordination
- Collaborate with the Volunteer Liaison to ensure effective volunteer program logistics and support
- Assist with volunteer communications and event staffing
Event Management
- Serve as the main contact for community-organized third-party fundraising events
- Support planning and execution of annual fundraising events and campaigns
Qualifications
- Experience in the nonprofit or charitable sector
- Diploma or degree in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing, or a related field
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with some public speaking experience
- Able to work independently in a fast-paced, multi-project environment
- Proficient with social media and website management (e.g., WordPress, Hootsuite, Facebook, Twitter)
- Skilled in Microsoft Office; experience with Canva, Adobe tools, and Constant Contact is an asset
- Experience in media relations, marketing content creation, and basic graphic design
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
Working Conditions
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Flexibility to work varied hours, including evenings or weekends for events.
- Some lifting of food items is required.
- Comfortable working with clients who may present challenges.
