Responsibilities:
The clerk’s responsibilities involve coordinating the orderly flow of patients and visitors in and out of the Department, reception and clerical activities within the Department and the dissemination and co-ordination of general information. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:
- Answer phone calls - relay messages, liaise between staff, physicians and public
- Make appointments for diagnostic test, dispatch the corresponding requisitions and specimens to appropriate departments and arrange patient escort if necessary
- Transcribe physician’s orders, fax med orders to pharmacy and order enter all other orders
- Update patient room list and board daily
- Write daily assignment sheet for next 24 hours under the direction of the Nurse Manager/Team Leader
- Stock charts and cupboards, file old sheets in charts
- Conducts monthly “dangerous abbreviations” chart audits
- Answer family questions and accompany visitors to patient's bedside
- Thin patient charts as necessary
- Order supplies for ward
Qualifications:
- Medical Office Administration or post-secondary education in related field required
- Medical Terminology or Administration post-secondary education or equivalent knowledge gained through past experience required
- Medical terminology experience and education required
- Excellent computer skills required with a demonstrated typing speed of 40 - 50 wpm
- Ability to transcribe orders is required
- An excellent telephone manner required
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to prioritize in a fast paced environment
- Demonstrated reliable attendance, punctuality, availability and performance required
