We are seeking a compassionate, energetic, and dedicated Child Care Assistant to join our team, specifically to provide one-on-one or small group support for children with disabilities within our inclusive daycare setting.
This role is crucial in ensuring that all children, including those with diverse needs, have access to engaging activities, a safe environment, and opportunities for social development.
The ideal candidate will be flexible and able to adapt to the varying needs of our children and our dynamic schedule.
Key Responsibilities:
- Individualized Support: Provide direct support to children with disabilities, assisting them with daily routines, transitions, and participation in group activities.
- Activity Facilitation: Adapt activities and materials to ensure children with disabilities can fully engage in play, learning, and social interactions alongside their peers.
- Behavioral Support: Implement individualized behavior plans and positive guidance strategies, as directed by supervisors or therapists, to support children's emotional regulation and social skills.
- Personal Care: Assist children with personal care needs (e.g., toileting, dressing, feeding) as required, always maintaining dignity and promoting independence.
- Communication: Maintain clear and consistent communication with lead educators, parents/guardians, and other professionals regarding a child's progress, challenges, and daily experiences.
- Safety & Supervision: Ensure the safety and well-being of all children in your care, adhering to all daycare policies, procedures, and provincial regulations.
- Documentation: Complete daily logs, incident reports, and other necessary documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other child care staff to create an inclusive and supportive environment for all children.
- Learning & Development: Participate in ongoing professional development and training relevant to supporting children with diverse needs.
Qualifications:
- Previous experience working with children, preferably in a daycare or educational setting, with a strong emphasis on supporting children with disabilities.
- Understanding of child development and inclusive practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect effectively with children, parents, and colleagues.
- Patience, empathy, flexibility, and a positive, enthusiastic attitude.
- Ability to adapt to changing situations and individual child needs.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain promptly).
- A clear Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry Check are mandatory.
- Specific training in areas like autism spectrum disorder, non-violent crisis intervention, or specific communication methods (e.g., PECS, ASL) is an asset.
- Available Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–6:00 PM
Hours: Part-time, typically 20 to 25 hours per week, with potential for full-time hours (up to 8 hours/day) during school in-service days and school holidays.
Term: This position is contingent upon continued provincial funding. Should funding cease, this position will be eliminated.
