Kamloops Immigrant Services (KIS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting immigrants, migrants, and newcomers in the Kamloops community. We prioritize the needs of our clients, helping them build a better future and feel at home in Canada. Our agency offers a range of free programs and services to assist individuals and families in overcoming the challenges of settling into a new country.
Position Overview
As a Career Development Practitioner – Youth Focus, you will work closely with newcomer youth (ages 15–30) to help them identify their strengths, build job readiness skills, and access meaningful employment and training opportunities. This dynamic role blends one-on-one coaching, workshop facilitation and outreach with opportunities to design and deliver innovative programming. You will be part of a collaborative Employment team that includes an Employment Coordinator and a fellow Career Development Practitioner (Adult Focus).
Key Responsibilities
Outreach & Engagement
- Promote the program to newcomer youth (aged 15–30), especially those facing barriers to employment or not currently in school or training.
- Build partnerships with schools, community organizations, youth programs, and settlement workers to recruit participants.
- Use creative outreach methods including social media, events, and youth/young adult-centred spaces.
One-on-One Career Coaching
- Conduct assessments to understand each client’s employment needs, career goals, skills, and potential barriers.
- Guide youth through career exploration, skill-building, and employment goal setting.
- Support with resumes, cover letters, interview prep, and understanding workplace expectations.
- Provide referrals to training, self-employment resources, and mentorship opportunities.
Workshops & Training
- Design and deliver engaging group sessions focused on job readiness, workplace communication, leadership, networking, and Canadian workplace culture.
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to host employment-related events such as job fairs, employer panels, and workplace tours.
Group Mentoring & Leadership Development
- Facilitate group mentoring sessions and connect youth with mentors and professionals.
- Support youth in developing leadership skills and confidence in employment settings.
- Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to recruit mentors and create learning opportunities.
Administration & Evaluation
- Track client progress, document outcomes, and maintain accurate and confidential records in KIS databases.
- Collect and analyze evaluation data to improve programming and demonstrate impact.
- Participate in team meetings, training, and cross-department collaboration within KIS.
What You Bring
- A degree, diploma, or certificate in social work, career development, human services, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- At least 1 year of experience supporting individuals in employment, career development, or settlement services.
- Knowledge of barriers faced by immigrant and refugee youth, and strategies to build confidence and inclusion.
- Strong understanding of Canadian workplace culture and the local/regional labour market.
- Experience facilitating group training sessions or workshops.
- Excellent interpersonal and coaching skills, with the ability to support diverse youth with empathy and creativity.
- Team player with a high degree of initiative, flexibility, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal); additional languages are an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, cloud-based tools, and social media platforms.
Additional Requirements
- Availability to occasionally work evenings or weekends for events.
- Possess a valid Canadian driver’s license and a reliable vehicle (required).
- Must consent to a Criminal Record Check (paid by KIS).
