SaskEnergy is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to join our team. The Assistant General Counsel and Corporate Secretary plays a key leadership role within the Legal Department, providing strategic legal advice, managing a team of in-house counsel, overseeing regulatory compliance, and providing expert legal counsel on a broad range of corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters.

Key Accountabilities
- Provide strategic oversight of the legal department’s daily operations, including supervision of in-house counsel, workload management, and performance evaluation.
- Lead the development and execution of the department’s business plan and budget, ensuring alignment with corporate objectives.
- Direct the organization’s regulatory compliance program, ensuring consistent adherence to applicable laws, regulations, and internal policies.
- Offer strategic guidance to the Manager of Regulatory Compliance, proactively monitor regulatory changes, assess organizational impact, and lead the implementation of responsive compliance strategies.
- Act as a corporate officer, reviewing and executing agreements as appropriate.
- Deliver legal solutions that integrate business priorities with the corporation’s strategic direction.
- Provide expert legal advice to senior leadership across a broad spectrum of corporate, commercial, operational, and regulatory matters.
- Advise on the legal risks and implications of major business decisions, ensuring alignment with the organization’s risk tolerance and strategic goals.
- Safeguard the corporation’s interests through effective negotiation, advocacy, and compliance with legal and policy frameworks.
- Draft and review complex legal documents, including contracts, memoranda, legislation, and Orders in Council.
- Support governance practices by preparing board and committee materials and advising on governance matters.
- Manage relationships with external legal counsel, including engagement, oversight, and evaluation of services.
- Provide strategic direction for litigation matters, including coordination with internal stakeholders, review of pleadings, insurance involvement, and litigation avoidance strategies.
- Support the Chief Privacy Officer in managing privacy-related issues, including investigations and responses to Freedom of Information requests, with a focus on minimizing corporate liability.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor Degree.
- Member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan or eligible to become a member of the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
- Ten (10) years of legal experience, including four (4) years in subject areas relevant to the business of SaskEnergy.
- Proven ability to manage a team while building and maintaining effective relationships.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas will be considered an asset: employment, litigation, gas supply, construction, information technology, insurance, regulatory, privacy, governance, real property, and/or environmental matters
- Familiarity with the legal and operational context of a Crown corporation is highly valued.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development and continuous learning.
A suitable combination of relevant education and experience may also be considered.
Additional Information
- Travel, including overnight stays away from bid headquarters, is required on occasion.
- A Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
