Assistant Coach, Men's Basketball

Huskie Athletics is seeking a full-time Assistant Coach to help our Men’s Basketball program on our journey back national prominence. We have high standards, and it is incumbent on the successful candidate to provide exemplary leadership in all areas related to the Huskies Men’s Basketball program.

Primary Purpose: Under the direction of the Men’s Basketball Head Coach, the ideal candidate is committed to managing an outstanding high-performance program focused on student-athlete recruitment and success, community engagement and the development of basketball regionally. In addition to assisting in the building of a nationally competitive program, the incumbent will deliver comprehensive grassroots programming.

Nature of Work: The position reports functionally to the Head Coach of Huskie Men’s Basketball and administratively to the Chief Athletics Officer (CAO) of Huskie Athletics. This position establishes and maintains the level of professional relationships that support exceptional collaboration with the Head Coach and appropriate leadership and mentorship to the student-athletes and potential recruits to the program. This is a high-volume position that works under pressure in a fast-paced environment, multi-tasking to meet competing deadlines. It is a high profile position and is visible in the University and the community. Potential candidates must recognize the responsibility that comes with this role and its potential impact on the credibility of Huskie Athletics, the College of Kinesiology, and the University of Saskatchewan. This position involves travel, as well as work on evening, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • Recruiting:
    • Attending assigned games, practices, and tournaments, some will acquire overnight travel
    • Contacting coaches and prospective student athletes as appropriate
    • Evaluating prospects and providing reports to the Head Coach
    • Support in the organization of on campus recruiting visits
  • Proficiency in Video Editing, for practice and game review as well as game preparation
  • Take a lead role as directed by the Head Coach in grassroots programming
  • Assist in the development of practice plans and the execution of those plans
  • Assist in carrying out individual training sessions with players as specified by Head Coach
  • Assist in coordinating tutoring help or academic support for student-athletes upon request
  • Teach appropriate classes when and if assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or CAO.

Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution is required. Consideration will be given to equivalent combination of experience and education.

Experience: Elite level coaching experience with a recruiting background and progress towards NCCP coaching levels is preferred. An understanding of U SPORT policies and procedures. An appreciation and understanding of the student-athlete experience is a must and strong basketball technical skills including a working knowledge of video editing and analysis are required.

Skills: The position requires effective and efficient verbal and written communications skills in all mediums; the ability to relate effectively with colleagues, coaches and staff; the ability to communicate effectively with student athletes, prospective student athletes, and alumni; proven success in a sports-oriented environment; the ability to manage and prioritize competing interests, projects and deadlines; demonstrated proficiency with contemporary computer applications, including game film editing and related activities. Driver’s License is essential.

About Huskie Athletics: The University of Saskatchewan (USask) began in 1907 and has housed varsity teams since 1911. The current Huskie Athletics program provides an elite experience to more than 400 student-athletes on 15 different athletic teams: men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross-country, football, men’s and women’s hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s volleyball and men’s and women’s wrestling. Our student-athletes compete in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association that spans from Victoria to Winnipeg. With 123 Canada West Championships and 27 national titles to our credit, Huskie Athletics is one of the most successful programs in the country.
