The purpose of this position is to be part of a team that provides quality public library services supporting the educational, recreational and information needs of the public. These positions are established to staff public libraries in the absence of permanent library staff on an as-needed basis. Responsibilities include the daily operation of the branch, including circulation service and assistance with technology. Other duties include delivering public programming and maintenance of library collections.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Opening and closing of library following set procedures;
- Check in and check out of library materials using automated library software, emptying book drop, and filling holds;
- Registering new patrons and updating patron account information;
- Renewing items and placing holds in person, via phone, via email;
- Implementing and explaining library policies;
- Resolving issues with patrons regarding library procedures and policies, fees, materials, lost or overdue items, etc.;
- Assisting patrons to find library materials (print and electronic) through reader’s advisory, online searches and interlibrary loan requests;
- Assisting patrons with accessing and using Wi-Fi, public computers, and printers and providing basic problem solving for technological/computer problems (public and staff).
- Instructing patrons on how to use library website, online catalogue, and online resources (e-books and e-audiobooks);
- Delivery of pre-planned programs;
- Shelving, shelf reading, and straightening library materials;
- Daily balance of cash; and
- Other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Grade 12, plus some university courses, library technician courses or relevant college diploma.
- Recent library experience preferred.
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Excellent and current computer skills and knowledge of basic software applications.
- Excellent Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills.
- Energetic, enthusiastic and able to provide quality customer service.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work with a minimum of supervision and as part of a team.
- Ability to lift boxes weighing 30-40 pounds, push 200-pound book carts, stand for long periods of time and carry materials for shelving.
- Must be willing to work evenings and weekends, minimum 3 hour shifts on an as-needed basis.
- Must be able to report for work on short notice.
Other Qualifications:
- Bilingualism would be considered an asset.
