School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a dynamic and passionate educator at Mt. Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, BC. Mt. Sentinel is a Grade 7-12 school, with a current enrolment of 285 students.




Job Description and Requirements:

We are looking for an innovative, creative and flexible teacher who can demonstrate a proficient understanding of the renewed BC curriculum, the new K-12 reporting policy, and School District 8, Kootenay Lake’s 2024 – 2029 Strategic Plan. The awarded applicant will have recent experience teaching and managing a secondary visual arts program, be well-versed in assessment strategies that support learning, familiar with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles, and demonstrate effective technology integration. They will strive to create an engaging, challenging, and supportive learning environment. The applicant will also have recent experience teaching in a multi-aged setting. The successful candidate will have access to a dedicated art room and materials, with opportunities to showcase student work through school exhibitions and public projects that celebrate the visual arts within the broader community. For this school year, the position includes Art Studio 11/12, Ceramics 11/12, Art Studio 9/10, and Visual Art for the Middle Years Program for this school year. Please note that the specific visual arts courses and the cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary arts courses shift from year to year based on student interest and timetable needs. The successful applicant will be responsible for delivering the full Visual Arts curriculum and guiding students in portfolio development to support applications to post-secondary Arts programs.





Educational Qualifications:





  • A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the BC Teacher Regulation Branch





  • Bachelor of Arts with Visual Arts training, or Bachelor of Education with



1. specialization in Fine Arts, or



2. completion of an undergraduate degree in art and methodology course work in secondary art, or



3. equivalent experience in the industry






  • Recent successful experience teaching visual arts from the start to the end of the school year in a secondary school setting.



  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and classroom management skills



  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies



  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment



  • Experience with a variety of learning management systems






Required Competencies and Experience:




1. Plan using backward design and differentiation strategies to develop curriculum grounded in the big ideas and learning standards of the BC curriculum. Establish and communicate clear learning outcomes or essential questions to students and parents.



2. Foster a mutually respectful, inclusive classroom culture that promotes student engagement and self-regulation, enabling all learners to achieve success through diverse instructional strategies.



3. Collaborate with colleagues and the School-Based Team, including the Learning Support Teacher, Aboriginal Education Teacher, Education Assistants, and Counsellor, to ensure that students with learning and behavioural challenges are supported through adaptations, modifications, and differentiation as required in their IEPs.



4. Engage students in the creative process using a variety of visual arts media, guiding exploration of materials, tools, and techniques to support personal expression through both two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms.



5. Recent successful experience teaching Visual Arts from the start to the end of the school year in a secondary school setting, demonstrating the ability to plan, implement, and assess a cohesive and developmentally appropriate program across grades and terms. This includes effective management of classroom materials and studio spaces, ordering and maintaining art supplies, and managing an annual departmental budget to support a diverse range of art projects aligned with curricular goals.



6. Demonstrated proficiency with current educational technologies and a growth mindset toward learning new tools and applications to enhance student learning and engagement.



7. Cognizant of Indigenous worldviews and knowledge, and able to establish positive, interdependent relationships with colleagues, students, families, and the community that reflect recognition of and respect for each learner’s unique abilities.



8. Work collaboratively with colleagues to design interdisciplinary learning sequences in a multi-aged setting, using visual arts as a foundation for creative inquiry and cross-curricular connections.



9. Engage in ongoing professional learning and reflective practice aligned with both the school’s goals and individual professional growth objectives.

  • Experience integrating Indigenous content, local artists, or community partnerships into visual arts curriculum
  • Skills in digital art, photography, or portfolio development
  • Interest or experience in leading extracurricular visual arts clubs or student exhibitions
