The Occupational Health and Safety Specialist is a senior supervisory role, consistently striving towards a healthy work environment for employees, volunteers, contractors, and visitors of the Sunshine Village Ski and Snowboard Resort. This role will demonstrate leadership through HS program development and by providing direction and guidance at Sunshine’s work sites. The OHS Specialist reports to the Vice-President, Legal and Compliance, and liaises frequently with all Resort departments, suppliers, and contracted personnel.
Job Functions
The primary function of this role is to review, develop, and implement standard health and safety training and programming designed to mitigate common risks inherent to a large ski resort operation. The OHS Specialist will also work alongside Managers and Supervisor to collaboratively develop and augment department-specific training.
Performing period HS inspections and audits of physical sites, worker responsibilities and job functions, and additional aspects of the work environment, with an eye to continuous improvement.
Taking a leading role in incident reporting and follow-up investigations, along with participating in additional reviews and making recommendations.
Providing an administration and oversight function of the SSV Joint Health and Safety Committee.
Maintaining current knowledge of OHS standards and best practices, aligning with the Resort’s philosophy of focusing on safety, fun, and professional guest service.
Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities:
- Organizing the collection of HS-related data to carry out investigations, produce reports, present statistics, audit compliance, and identify areas for growth and improvement.
- Managing a budget, ordering common HS inventory, and coordinating third-party service providers.
- Ensuring documentation is completed in a timely manner e.g., incident tracker and reports, scheduled reports, employee training, preventative maintenance records, certifications, permits.
- Conduct, attend, and participate in meetings and training, departmentally and Resort-wide.
- Be involved, where required, in HS-related performance management, and additional investigations and inspections.
Experience/Requirements
- The successful candidate will have a degree or technical diploma in HS, HSE, or a related field.
- A CRSP, CSP, or NCSO designation is an asset for this role.
- 3-10 years’ experience in HSE and experience in the recreation and tourism field or similar industry. A combination of training and experience will be considered alongside a career trajectory with exposure to varied industries, work environments, and a seasonal or young workforce.
- Proven ability to manage a schedule, complete task work in a timely manner, and be in the field.
- Proficient in computer systems, applications, and document control, and developing HSE content that can be delivered online and in-person.
- The ability to communicate effectively and objectively, in English (written and verbally) with a range from entry-level staff to senior company representatives and regulatory personnel is a must.
- Maintain professional conduct on/off-duty and when knowingly acting as a company representative.
- Effectively provide training, support, and assistance to others.
- Must be neat, alert, punctual, and dependable.
- Employees must always be of sound mind, exhibit good judgment, and report to work fit for duty.
- This role may work a flexible, changing seasonal schedule (weekends, holidays, nights, extended hours). The chosen candidate must appreciate that urgent issues may arise outside of regular business hours and have a suitable level of availability for this aspect of the role.
- The chosen candidate is required to work on-site a minimum of 4 days per week and be able to meet the physical and sensory demands of working in a high-altitude, alpine environment.
- This position may require the ability to ski and snowboard professionally and may also operate a vehicle when required. Candidates must undergo additional internal training and competency review before these actions are permitted as part of the role.
