The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a General Manager, Health, Safety, Environmental Risk to join our team in Sudbury, Ontario. Relocation will be required for this role.

The General Manager, Health Safety Environmental Risk is a senior leader within the Ontario Region’s mining operations, responsible for driving world-class safety, health, and environmental performance through expert risk management. Reporting directly to the Director of Ontario Operations, this role fosters a zero-harm culture by developing and overseeing key strategies, providing data-driven insights, and advising executives with industry best practices. With deep mining sector expertise, the incumbent leads four vital portfolios—Safety & Risk Management, Environmental Management, Health and Disability Management, and Protection Services—ensuring safe, compliant, and resilient operations across mining, processing, and project sites.


Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Team Leadership: Lead and develop a large multidisciplinary Health Safety Environmental Risk team through recruiting, training, succession planning, and performance evaluations to build high-performing units.
  • Strategic Risk Leadership: Craft and implement short to long-term risk reduction strategies aligned with business goals, aiming to eliminate serious incidents and foster a zero-harm culture.
  • Executive Influence: Advise leadership across Ontario Operations and contribute strategic insight to Vale Base Metals policies, shaping health, safety, and environmental risk approaches.
  • Monitoring & Compliance: Conduct audits, maintain records, enforce safety programs, and manage compliance with legislative and corporate safety standards, often interfacing with regulatory and union bodies.
  • Incident Investigation: Lead significant accident investigations, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions while guiding risk classification and mitigation processes.
  • Environmental Oversight: Foster environmental stewardship, ensure regulatory compliance, and manage programs for legacy issues, decommissioning, and reclamation.
  • Health & Disability Strategy: Direct workplace wellness programs including occupational health, injury management (WSIB/WCB, STD/LTD), substance support initiatives, and mental health services.
  • Protection Services Management: Provide strategic direction to protection services, ensuring exemplary emergency response, site security, and injury management within a unionized workforce.


About You

Education:

  • An undergraduate degree in a related field is required.
  • Preferred Certifications are as follows:
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Certified Mine Safety Professional (CMSP)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
  • Registered Safety Professional (RSP)


Experience:

A minimum of 11 years’ experience.


Skills:

  • Strong understanding of Ontario mining operations and safety protocols
  • Expertise in mining regulations, risk management, and environmental compliance
  • Leadership skills to drive safety culture and manage diverse teams
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities to support informed decision-making
  • Effective communication for training, reporting, and stakeholder engagement
  • Commitment to ethical conduct, adaptability, and continuous improvement
