8 hours per day with a flexible work schedule, which may include working after school, evenings, and on weekends

Term beginning immediately with and end date of July 10, 2026

Starting Wages:

Fully Qualified - $27.56 per hour

Partially Qualified - $21.56 per hour

A position is available for a Native Student Advisor (NSA) in the North Kings Area of the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education, school sites include Northeast Kings Education Centre, Kings County Academy and Glooscap Elementary School. This position will be supporting students of Indigenous ancestry in the Horton Family of Schools, reporting to the Coordinator of Mi’Kmaq Services/Education. This position is for 8 hours per day.


The Native Student Advisor will work directly with Indigenous students to provide support to them and their families in making schooling a positive experience. The goal of the Native Student Advisor is to help students achieve success and remain in school by fostering a positive environment of good will, respect and dignity among students, parents/guardians, teachers and all community members. The Native Student Advisor will be required to work outside of regular school hours in accordance with the Collective Agreement in order to accomplish the goals of the program.


Position Requirements:

  • post-secondary education (in human services or a related field preferred);
  • be of Indigenous identity (preference given to Mi’Kmaq);
  • knowledge of the Indigenous Nova Scotian Community;
  • experience and ability to work with Indigenous Nova Scotian youth, parents/guardians and communities;
  • demonstrated skills working with youth;
  • excellent interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills;
  • ability to work collaboratively as part of a team involving students, teachers, parents/guardians, support agencies, and the surrounding communities;
  • ability to work independently;
  • willingness to acquire a thorough knowledge and understanding of the communities served by the schools and to attend related community meetings;
  • knowledge of, experience in, and commitment to the principles of race relations, cross-cultural understanding and human rights; knowledge and experience in mediation and conflict resolution;
  • a valid Nova Scotia drivers license and access to a properly insured vehicle as per School Centre policy, if required to transport students;
  • a current Driver’s Abstract will be required.
  • a current Child Abuse Registry/Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector.
  • willing to take pertinent training.
