The Faculty of Arts is currently seeking a Part-time Staff Limited Term Large Course Coordinator for approximately 8 months.

The Department of Sociology is seeking a temporary (7-month) part-time Large Course Coordinator to work 17.5 hours per week to support the department with coordinating and facilitating various needs of students enrolled in courses with high enrollments.
Reporting to the Manager, Pod Operations, the Large Course Coordinator provides crucial administrative and coordination support for large courses within the Sociology and Law and Society undergraduate programs. This support will range from coordinating students' course related needs such as term work deferrals, accommodations, exam result reviews, coordinating instructor communications, etc. to facilitating or referring students to necessary and appropriate campus student support services as needed. This position will be critical in mitigating inequities between the Department of Sociology and other Arts departments in relation to the workload associated with teaching large-enrollment courses, and between faculty within the department in relation to teaching load by numbers of students.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
- Hold regular office hours in the Department of Sociology to assist and meet with students to provide information related to course content, grading, and exam schedules.
- Be well-versed and knowledgeable of courses that require support of this position.
- Serve as first point of contact and coordinator for students enrolled in courses with high student counts for deferral of term work, deadline extensions, or make-up exams.
- Assist instructors with managing gradebooks in D2L, including uploading grades and verifying accuracy of grades inputted.
- Organize accommodations for students as required and liasing with the Students Accommodations Services to arrange accommodated exams then coordinating with instructors or exam invigilators to ensure accommodations are properly managed.
- Manage and Coordinate make-up exams that are outside of department scheduled make.
- Coordinate with instructors around exceptional student situations/circumstances that require adjustments to course deadlines and requirements.
- Follow-up with students who have missed term work or assessments, as needed.
- Arrange for freely accessible copies of course materials to be available for all courses (could include: reserve copies at the library, copies on publishers' websites, copyright approved versions on D2L, etc.).
- Arrange for copyright approval of course materials (when instructors submit material requests with sufficient time for this work to be done).
- Facilitate, coordinate, and host office hours to provide students with opportunity to review exam and further coordinate discussion on exam results between students and instructor or Teaching Assistants as requested.
- Maintain a calendar of important deadlines and dates for all assigned large courses to anticipate and plan for periods of high volumes of student requests.
- Refer students to appropriate campus student resources as needed.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Degree or experience in Education or Administration will be an asset.
- Familiarity with Sociology and Law and Society undergraduate programs preferred, familiarity with Faculty of Arts undergraduate programs would also be an asset.
- Proven expertise with D2L and PeopleSoft.
- Proven proficiency with the University of Calgary's student registration and course administration procedures.
- Knowledge of university academic policies and procedures.
- Strong proficiency in Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Ability to learn new processes and procedures quickly, and respond to inquiries in an efficient and appropriate manner.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills required to collaborative with a diverse population, including faculty, staff, and students.
- Proven organization skills, and ability to coordinate large volume of tasks or requests.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain productive, professional working relationships with students, staff, and faculty.
- Proven ability to be sensitive and maintain composure during interactions with students who may be under duress or pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and prioritize tasks with tight timelines.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
