POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the IPAC Lead, the Assistant IPAC and Clinical Educator will support the routine clinical activities of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) program and the work of the IPAC Lead including but not limited to the following: surveillance, collecting and reporting on data and statistics, provision of IPAC education, and consultation regarding infection control issues; outbreak management and investigation; policy development and implementation; committee activities; education of staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
INFECTION CONTROL
- Carry out active surveillance for and timely reporting of reportable communicable diseases externally to the local Public Health and internally to Occupational Health and Safety, including reporting and calculation of healthcare associated infection rates.
- Educate staff on the principles and practices of infection prevention and act as a resource regarding infection prevention and control.
- Provide support to ensure the maintenance of current vaccines for all residents.
- Assist with investigation management and reporting of sentinel infection control events (e.g. infectious disease outbreaks) including development of formal reports and provision of written recommendations to prevent recurrences.
- Monitor staff compliance with infection prevention guidelines regarding the disposal of sharps and biomedical waste, use of personal protective equipment, hand hygiene practices and provides reports to the Infection Prevention Committees.
- Perform program assessments and make recommendations for correction and improvement.
- Lead the annual influenza vaccination campaign for staff and residents.
- Participation in quality improvement initiatives related to infection control.
- Education of staff new staff, existing staff and agency staff regarding current infection prevention and control standards/requirements (such as routine practices - hand hygiene use of personal protective equipment and additional precautions etc.).
- Supporting Clinical Services staff with day-to-day resident isolation management.
- Completes documentation according to Home and sector-specific regulatory standards.
- Builds and maintains positive, cooperative relationships with external providers, such as the Ministry of Health Compliance Advisor and Public Health Inspectors.
CLINICAL EDUCATION
- Develop, implement, and evaluate orientation and continuing education programs tailored to clinical staff.
- Partner with Clinical Quality and internal stakeholders to align education with clinical standards, regulatory expectations, and resident care goals.
- Create and maintain clinical training materials, such as user guides and job aids.
- Provide hands-on mentorship and education for nursing and clinical staff to support best practices, documentation standards, and professional development.
- Lead training initiatives for new procedures and clinical programs.
- Analyze feedback and performance data to improve training methodologies and enhance learning outcomes.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:
- Degree or diploma in Nursing, Health Sciences or a related field.
- Current Certificate of Competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Completed/enrolled in IPAC-Canada/APIC endorsed infection control course or recent infection control experience.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
- Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.
- Strong understanding of IPAC standards, infectious disease prevention, epidemiology, and healthcare legislation.
- Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Skilled in adult education program design, training delivery, and clinical mentorship.
- Excellent verbal & written communication with the ability to educate and influence diverse teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, clinical documentation systems, and eLearning platforms.
- Ability to develop and deliver educational programs for all healthcare worker categories.
