1. About the Alberta Association of Midwives (AAM)
Since 1986, the Alberta Association of Midwives (AAM) has been the professional body representing midwives in Alberta. AAM supports a community of passionate healthcare providers who deliver high-quality, safe, and cost-effective care during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. The Canadian midwifery model is grounded in continuity of care, informed choice, evidence-based practices, and choice of birth setting.
With approximately 186 Registered Midwives attending over 10% of births annually in Alberta, AAM is committed to advancing midwifery through advocacy, education, and policy development.
2. Purpose of the RFP
AAM is seeking proposals from qualified individuals or organizations to lead a project focused on Indigenous Relations within the midwifery community across Alberta. The primary goal is to build meaningful relationships with Indigenous midwives, communities, and organizations, and to provide policy advice that supports culturally safe and equitable midwifery care.
3. Scope of Work
The successful contractor will be responsible for:
Relationship Building
– Engage with Indigenous midwives, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community leaders across Alberta.
– Facilitate respectful dialogue and listening sessions to understand community needs, priorities, and perspectives on midwifery care.
– Build trust and long-term relationships that support collaboration and mutual learning.
Outreach & Collaboration
– Coordinate outreach with Indigenous health organizations, midwifery associations, and other relevant stakeholders.
– Share findings and recommendations through briefing notes, presentations, and a final report.
Equity & Inclusion
– an anti-oppression lens and uphold principles of equity, diversity, and human rights throughout the project.
– Ensure Indigenous voices are centered in all aspects of the work.
4. Proposal Requirements
Please include the following in your submission:
– Overview of relevant experience in Indigenous relations, policy development, and stakeholder engagement.
– Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and/or in healthcare or non-profit sectors.
– Proposed methodology, including engagement strategy and timeline.
– Fee structure, including any anticipated additional costs.
– References from at least two similar projects or organizations.
5. Evaluation Criteria
Proposals will be evaluated based on:
– The successful proposer must be in Alberta.
– Depth of experience in Indigenous engagement and policy development.
– Understanding of midwifery and healthcare contexts.
– Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
– Cost-effectiveness and value for money.
– Strength of references and reputation.
