The Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation within Alberta (MNA) is seeking a full-time Early Learning and Child Care Centre Manager to join the Children and Family Services Department and be responsible for the overall day-to-day management of the Mêtawêtan Early Learning and Child Care Centre (ELCC Centre). Reporting to the Associate Director of Child Care, the Early Learning and Child Care Centre Manager will lead a dedicated team of child care professionals and foster a nurturing, inclusive, and engaging environment for Métis children and families. The successful candidate will ensure high-quality, culturally grounded child care is delivered in alignment with Métis values and community needs. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate and experienced Early Learning professional to contribute to the growth and development of an Early Learning and Child Care Centre.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support the ELCC team in the development, implementation, evaluation, and reporting of programming.
  • Support the development and implementation of systems and resources to guide the ELCC team in the delivery of programs in a safe, meaningful, and effective manner.
  • Oversee waitlist management and enrolment processes, including conducting interviews with potential families and caregivers, responding to inquiries via phone and email, and advertising available childcare spaces.
  • Support program oversight and assist with family onboarding as needed.
  • Develop and maintain staff schedules, including coordinating vacation requests, managing sick days, and resolving scheduling conflicts.
  • Manage inventory for the centre, including ordering, cataloguing, and distributing supplies and food. Review and approve purchase requests in accordance with centre guidelines.
  • Review and authorize menu changes and food-related requests.
  • Lead recruitment efforts, including interviewing, hiring, and onboarding new staff members.
  • Handle staff-related matters, including conflict resolution, complaints, disciplinary actions, performance reviews, and both onboarding and offboarding processes.
  • Mentor team members and provide effective leadership through feedback, coaching, and formal evaluations.
  • Establish and maintain positive and supportive internal and external partnerships.
  • Collaborate with the Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) staff, Elders, parents, and community stakeholders to strengthen Métis cultural learning opportunities.
  • Support other Otipemisiwak Métis Government Children and Family Services initiatives and perform other duties as required or assigned.

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to effectively manage a high caseload.
  • Strong understanding of Métis culture, history, and traditions, with a commitment to culturally relevant programming.
  • Passion for early childhood education and child development, with a focus on culturally safe practices.
  • Political and cultural sensitivity and a strong sense of ethics, with the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality in all interactions.
  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture is an asset.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary Degree/Diploma in Early Childhood Education, or a related field. Equivalent experience will be considered.
  • Child Care Certificate (Level 2 or 3) is required.
  • At least two (2) years’ experience working in the Child Care field.
  • Two (2) years’ of leadership experience. Experience supervising a team of direct reports is preferred.
  • Management Training is an asset.
  • Indigenous Awareness Training is an asset.

Other Requirements

  • Position will be based in Edmonton.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Some travel within Edmonton is a requirement. Additional less frequent travel throughout Alberta may also occur, with notice.
  • Must have a Class 5 driver’s license and an operational vehicle.
  • Acceptable attainment and annual maintenance of a clear Police Information Check with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check and a Child Intervention Record Check is required.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Level C are required.
