Position Overview

You have an uncanny knack for genuinely connecting and understanding the needs of local governments and Indigenous communities and believe a strong reputation goes a long way when it comes to building and strengthening partnerships. You possess the ability to be empathetic, seeing all sides of every situation and have the ability to apply your negotiating skills to find common ground through transparent and respectful conversations.

As our Community and Indigenous Relations Manager, your role entails collaborating with local government and Indigenous communities to advance and support FortisBC projects and business priorities. You will be part of a team that is the first point of contact for the company with communities, focusing on effective engagement to support our operational activities. All while encouraging opportunities for local participation in projects and incorporating feedback from Indigenous communities and stakeholders into company planning and execution of projects, decarbonization goals, and initiatives.

In this role, you will:

  • Build relationships with Indigenous communities, local government elected officials and staff, and business organizations through proactive engagement and timely resolution of issues.
  • Remain abreast of energy polices, tracking relevant regulatory developments, and providing insight and recommendations on potential opportunities and challenges.
  • Build familiarity with company’s programs and services to support objectives.
  • Collaborate with internal business units to help remove operational and maintenance issues.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to implement strategies to maximize results and minimize risks.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships with representatives from local governments, Indigenous communities, and the public at large.

What it takes:

  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, communications or other related discipline from a recognized program plus four (4) years of strategic consultation and engagement experience in Community and Indigenous relations.
  • Proven project management skills with a strong ability to balance and prioritize multiple competing tasks.
  • Skilled in delivering presentations, public speaking, and navigating challenging conversation with strong interpersonal and team-building abilities.
  • Capable of asserting interests while managing competing perspectives with strong analytical and professional judgment skills.
  • Proficient in supporting applications and obtaining permits through British Columbia regulatory agencies, such as the BC Utilities Commission, BC Environmental Assessment Office, and BC Energy Regulator.
  • Indigenous and stakeholder relations experience with communities in British Columbia.
  • Experience in conflict resolution, negotiation, and public participation training is considered an asset.

In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.

Our engaging workplace offers a wide range of challenging opportunities, while being safe, inclusive and diverse. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, while supporting life-long career development. We also encourage volunteerism and nourish the need to give back to your community.
