Overview Support the mental health and wellness of urban Indigenous individuals and families through culture based, trauma-informed, and strengths-focused approaches. This role includes offering peer counselling, hosting sharing circles, and creating programming for Mental Health Awareness, to help community members work toward a Good Mind.
Qualification & Requirements A 2-year College Diploma in Social Service Work, Mental Health & Addictions, or a related field. Previous experience in a similar role is an asset, but if you have the skills and passion, we encourage you to apply even without direct experience. Must have or be able to obtain a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check (CPIC). Must hold a valid Ontario Class G driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
Primary Responsibilities 1. Coordinate Family Wellness programs and events. 2. Build and maintain connections with Indigenous and non-Indigenous agencies, organizations, and services to support clients experiencing mental health challenges. 3. Provide information, guidance, and initial contact support to individuals, families, and communities seeking mental health assistance, including completing referrals, applications, and arranging emergency support when needed. 4. Design, develop, and deliver mental health education sessions for individuals, families, community organizations, and service providers. 5. Promote a sense of belonging through cultural awareness and activities.
Knowledge & Skills Strong understanding of Traditional Cultural knowledge and the ability to apply it when supporting community members, using an Indigenous perspective alongside awareness of western approaches. Deep awareness of the cultural, social, and practical needs, barriers, and goals of Indigenous people, with care, compassion, and the ability to build genuine connections. Knowledge of the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre, as well as surrounding Indigenous and non Indigenous organizations, to help connect community members, youth, and families with appropriate supports. Ability to assess community needs in an urban setting and develop action plans in collaboration with individuals, families, and youth. Strong organizational skills, including planning, meeting deadlines, and working well both independently and as part of a team. Excellent communication skills, including facilitating discussions and delivering engaging presentations. Proficiency in computer use and digital tools.
