Job Summary
This position is responsible for delivering experiential learning experiences to Health and Exercise Science (HES) Practicum students placed within the Hangar Fitness Center (the Hangar) as well as forging relationships to explore how the practicum model developed with the Hanger can expand into other locations across the City of Kelowna. This will be a piloted part time position during 2025-2026 where there will be 5-10 Health and Exercise Sciences practicum students

Organizational Status
This position directly reports to the Director of Health and Exercise Sciences (HES) and works in collaboration with HES faculty to deliver an exceptional experience for Health and Exercise Science Practicum students. They will also work closely with personnel at the UBCO Hanger Fitness Centre and staff at Parkinson Recreation to explore opportunities for student practicums. This position directly supervises Health and Exercise Science practicum students.

Work Performed
Major Responsibilities
Practicum Student Management
  • Responsible for designing and delivering practicum student orientation and training.
  • Scheduling all practicum students to ensure that they are meeting the requirements of their practicums.
  • Responsible for overseeing, supervising and collaborating on physical activity assessment protocols and exercise prescription for practicum students to utilize for users on a one-to-one basis. Responsible for mentoring practicum students to deliver assessments, exercise prescription, and exercise technique correction.
  • Responsible for creation of student learning plans inclusive of goals/objectives, responsibilities, supervision provided, and timeline/schedule.
  • Responsible for delivering midpoint and final evaluations for practicum students.
  • Development and delivery of professional development opportunities for practicum students.
  • Providing supervision and mentorship for practicum students to ensure professional assessments, exercise prescription, personal training sessions and high quality and safe exercise.
  • Provides training for all students on incident reports and emergency procedures as they will act as emergency wardens if required.

Personal Training & Instructional Programming
  • Collaborates with the School of Health and Exercise Sciences to explore opportunities to expand the practicum program to other sites across the City of Kelowna..
  • Delivers fitness related programs/workshops with the support of practicum students that cater to the broad demographics of students and those traditionally under-represented.
  • Market and promote all personal training and instructional programming.
  • Manages PAR-Q form and consent form administration, collection and tracking applicable to personal training and instructional programming.
  • Maintain full knowledge of current risk management standards and common safety practices in personal training and exercise programming and ensure adherence to such standards by all staff and students. Complete incident response and reporting as required.
  • Collect statistics and data on program activities to evaluate and implement program changes accordingly.

The Hangar Fitness Center Operations
  • Maintain and uphold policies, procedures, and etiquette of Hangar Fitness Centre and personal training to ensure high fitness services are delivered.
  • Responsible for the general cleanliness and tidiness of Hangar and organizing/allocating work and duties to practicum students.
  • Provide accurate, courteous and professional service to all users and ensuring all practicum students are doing the same.
  • Using ActiveNet in the most efficient and productive manner, properly training practicum students to help with business processes including but not limited to maintaining a working knowledge of customer accounts, pass validation, photos, customer notes, reports.
  • Ensure all practicum students and clients of practicum students are kept up to date and aware of all facility closures and/or program cancellations/changes.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
When working in the high-risk environment of a fitness facility the use of good judgement, delivery of proper staff training and member education, effective decision making, and exercising proper risk management is imperative. Effective policies and procedures must be developed and maintained for staff and facility users to ensure a safe, friendly and welcoming fitness atmosphere. Failing to administer and maintain proper facility policies could result in serious injury to staff members and/or facility users; furthermore, delivering programs in an environment where exercise is taking place requires supervising properly trained staff. Failing to hire, supervise and evaluate staff may result in serious injuries to participants, a tarnished image of the university, or possible situations of university litigation.

Supervision Received
This position will report to the Director of the School of Health and Exercise Sciences. Within Athletics and Recreation, and while performing duties at the UBCO Hanger Fitness Centre, The Recreation Manager will help coordinate the daily operations and schedule of the Clinical Exercise Physiologist. Decisions related directly to fitness will be that of the Clinical Exercise Physiologist. This position will work closely with the HES faculty to ensure practicum students are receiving quality experiences.

Supervision Given
Responsible for training, supervising, mentoring, and evaluating 5-10 Health and Exercise Sciences practicum students during the pilot year of this program (2025-2026). The Clinical Exercise Physiologist will assist in the supervision of Hangar Monitor student staff and personal trainers when requested or necessary.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Completion of a bachelor level university degree or higher in a relevant discipline in Human Kinetics, Physical Education, etc. is required.
  • A minimum of three years related experience in fitness programming, strength and conditioning or related sport, recreation, and fitness activities or the equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Canada Society for Exercise Physiology – Clinical Exercise Physiologist certification required.
  • Experience with staff management required.
  • First aid certification required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A thorough understanding of providing exceptional customer service and the ability to empower others to do so.
  • Experience in developing and delivering facility policies and procedures.
  • Experience leading professional development as it relates to fitness, exercise and conditioning.
  • Experience in group/team training is an asset.
  • A working knowledge of ActiveNet is an asset.
  • Strong initiative and proven ability to work independently.
  • Able to work well as a member of a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, financial, computer and organizational skills essential.
  • Demonstrated conflict-resolution skills.
  • Able to generate and implement new ideas.
