The Opportunity

We are seeking a self-directed, engaging, empathetic Child and Youth Support Worker to join our growing team. Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Child and Youth Support Worker monitors and attends to the well-being and safety of all persons residing in specialized home support services, maintaining a supportive, non-judgmental, inclusive, comfortable, clean and safe living environment. The program, located in Langley, is a 24-hour emergency receiving home for youth between the ages of 12 to 19 who are in need of short-term stabilization.

Child and Youth Support Workers work with some of the most vulnerable and complex youth in the care of, or on a Youth Agreement with, the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience in meeting youth where they’re at, recognition of the ongoing influence of trauma and disconnection on the youth served and support building on youth’s strengths and passions to create meaning. Delivery of these services must be provided with an understanding of the ongoing effects of trauma, isolation and vulnerability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the living environment for program participants is trauma informed, inclusive, comfortable, non-judgmental and reflective of cultural practices.
  • Engages in supportive conversations and provides emotional support to program participants on a one-one and/or group basis.
  • Engaging with program participant’s to ensure personal needs are met by promoting life skills (ex. basic personal hygiene, preparing healthy and nutritious meals, access to community resources.)
  • Ensures home environment is safe.
o Ensuring cupboards containing biohazardous materials, medications, sharps or cleaners are secured and accounted for.
o May be required to complete room, bag or personnel checks to ensure safety of youth, staff and home environment.
o Records, reports and responds to potential health and safety risks within home.
o Completes and reports sharps counts once per shift.
o Performs a minimum of two safety checks for program participants and ensures proper documentation is completed (during overnight shift).
  • Responds to emergencies in accordance with established policies and procedures including proper notifications (supervisor, MCFD, other professionals etc.).
  • Adapts communication and non-verbal approaches to meet the needs of program participants and team members.
  • Ensures that logbooks and other documentation such as case notes and incident reports are legible and completed as per program expectations. Completes notifications for incidents as required (AWOL/Missing Person’s reports) etc.
  • Provides transportation and accompanies program participants to support them in attending appointments and healthy community activities.
  • Performs housekeeping duties in support of health and safety regulations. This may include but is not limited to vacuuming, dusting, emptying garbage, sanitizing, cleaning and laundry. Reports maintenance needs to the supervisor.
  • Monitors program participant’s medications in accordance with established policy, guidelines and training.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


We are interested in candidates with the following Qualifications:

1. Education and Knowledge
  • Certificate/Diploma in a related human/social service field
  • Education and experience utilizing trauma informed practice


2. Training and Experience

  • Two (2) years recent related experience
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Current First Aid
  • Food Safety certificate


3. Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess a working knowledge of computers (Microsoft Word/Excel/Teams)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving, conflict resolution, crisis intervention and de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to be flexible, resourceful and possess good time management skills.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving physical activity, including lifting, and bending.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of trauma-informed and culturally safe principles of care.
  • Effective listening skills that promote communication and a cooperative approach to problem solving and decision making.
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a multicultural environment, independently and as part of a team, including understanding the frameworks of other disciplines.
  • Knowledge of systemic issues and risk factors facing underrepresented, racialized, neurodiverse, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and communities.
  • Maintains professional integrity and confidentiality.
  • Must have strong professional and personal boundaries.

4. Other Information
  • Must possess a valid BC Class 5 Drivers’ license, have a reliable vehicle, Business Insurance and acceptable drivers abstract. (mileage paid for work use)
  • Police Information check and MCFD background clearance.
