We are seeking a Law Clerk specializing in Wills & Estates to join our legal team at Korman & Company in Toronto, Ontario. This role provides essential support to our lawyers who assist clients with estate planning and administration.
The ideal candidate will have a background working in a law firm and will be comfortable working in a fast paced, team oriented environment providing administrative assistance to our Wills & Estate Lawyer.
Key Responsibilities:
- Document Preparation: Drafting various legal documents, such as wills, powers of attorney (for property and personal care), trusts, and codicils. This involves gathering client information and ensuring adherence to legal requirements and client instructions.
- Estate Administration Support: Assisting with the probate process, including preparing applications for Certificates of Appointment of Estate Trustee and drafting notices to beneficiaries. You will also help with inventorying estate assets and liabilities and communicating with the court.
- Client Interaction: Communicating with clients to gather necessary information, provide file updates, and respond to general inquiries under lawyer supervision.
- File Management: Organizing and maintaining client files, ensuring accurate document filing, deadline tracking, and confidentiality. This includes managing correspondence and preparing reporting letters.
- Financial and Asset Support: Assisting with the identification and valuation of estate assets, coordinating with financial institutions, and helping to prepare statements of accounts for estate trustees.
- Tax-Related Assistance: Gathering information for income tax and estate tax filings, and assisting with the preparation of relevant forms, often in coordination with accountants.
- Support for Executors and Beneficiaries: Providing administrative support to executors in fulfilling their duties, such as notifying beneficiaries, distributing assets, and preparing release documents.
Qualifications:
- 2+ year of experience
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines effectively.
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel)
- Familiarity with software (Estateably, eState Planner, Cosmolex) is an asset
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Demonstrated understanding of legal processes and terminology relevant to estate law
