CLOSES: Open Until Filled
Be Part of Something Meaningful!
Are you passionate about community safety, healing, and cultural restoration? The Public Safety Department is expanding its team to better support Sḵwx̱wú7mesh people and staff impacted by safety incidents and climate emergencies such as heatwaves and flooding. We are looking for a Community Relations Team Lead who brings compassion, cultural humility, and a proactive approach to support community and staff wellness. This role is key in building trust, facilitating healing, and fostering culturally safe connections during difficult moments, while also supporting the Nation's long-term public safety goals. If you are community-driven, collaborative, and grounded in Squamish values, this is your opportunity to make a lasting impact.
What You’ll Do
- Foster strong, trusting relationships between the Public Safety Department and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh communities, helping community members feel safe and supported during times of crisis.
- Act as a point of contact and connector for individuals affected by safety incidents or emergencies—linking them to cultural, healing, mental health, and emergency services.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with internal departments including Language & Cultural Affairs, Yúustway (Health & Wellness), Ta na wa Ns7éyx̱nitm ta Snew̓íyelh (Family & Child Services), and the Council Office.
- Represent the department in external meetings and during emergencies with police, firefighters, emergency management agencies, and health/social service organizations.
- Coordinate and support spiritual, healing, cultural, and wellness events and ceremonies.
- Support and advise on the integration of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh culture, values, and approaches into public safety strategies and initiatives.
- Collect feedback from community members and knowledge keepers to ensure programming and supports are culturally responsive and relevant.
- Support communication, engagement, and trust-building efforts around emergency preparedness and response.
- Participate in incident response efforts during challenging events by being a calm, caring, and respectful presence in community.
- Uphold all workplace health and safety policies and participate in planning for safe community response strategies.
What We're Looking For
- Degree or diploma in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Public Safety, Emergency Management, Community Engagement, or a related field.
- Experience in a community-based, safety, healing, or cultural wellness role, ideally within an Indigenous context.
- Deep understanding of Sḵwx̱wú7mesh culture, protocols, and community dynamics, or a strong commitment to learning and working in a culturally appropriate way.
- Ability to communicate clearly, compassionately, and effectively in times of crisis or stress.
- Strong facilitation, coordination, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Experience working with emergency response systems or first responders is an asset.
- Trauma-informed and culturally safe approach to healing and community support.
- Strong organizational skills, time management, and attention to detail.
- BC Class 5 Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation (travel to Squamish is required).
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
