Supportive Roommate Live-In
The supportive roommate will be responsible to assist our family member, whom is an adult with an intellectual disability, to pursue and work towards their goal of living the most independent life as possible in a supported, independent living, townhouse. Our family member enjoys sporting events, such as hockey, snowboarding, and playing golf. He likes to be active, which is evident in his energetic lifestyle. The supportive roommate will be guided by the goals and objectives, determined in collaboration and consultation with our family member and us as parents. The supportive roommate will be responsible for ensuring that our family member is involved in a variety of community-oriented evening/weekend activities of their choice and assist our family member in pursuing healthy relationships. The supportive roommate will live in our family’s establish townhouse in McKenzie Towne. The supportive roommate will be an active person with a comfortable, welcoming, inclusive, mindset and a passion for the right of all people to belong participate and contribute to the community and society.
Key Responsibilities:
· Develop a positive and supportive relationship with our family member and support them to create a safe, healthy, and happy home environment.
· Collaborate with our family and involve our family member in the household purchases and doing the grocery shopping for the home. Look at purchasing food items from the perspective of meal planning, healthy food eating habits and cost management. Look to reduce gluten, dairy and preservative items in our family members meals due to sensitivities.
· Encourage our family member to create healthy eating choices and habits including eating meals with friends and family. Encourage our family member to help make and prep meals.
· Pursue and encourage outside of home activities for our family member. This will support their overall physical and mental well-being and will create opportunities for them to develop new friendships. Doing so will require the supportive roommate to research and arrange opportunities for our family member to participate in evenings/weekends activities in the community, such as recreational clubs, volunteer interests, associations, etc. The supportive roommate will be the conduit between the community group and our family member to facilitate their meaningful participation. Additionally, participate with our family member by going to the gym at least twice a week. This goal is critical to our family members well-being and growth.
· Coach and mentor our family member in appropriate relationship building. Encourage and assist our family member in the respectful treatment of others. Discourage, disrespectful comments and treatment of others based on their culture, disability, appearance, or personality.
Prompting in daily personal care routine and general health and hygiene routines (Ex. reminders to shower, brush teeth). Administer and monitor medications.
Encourage and influence a healthy lifestyle such as promote healthy eating, incorporating meditation and exercise into routines (i.e., walks) if possible.
· Establish an agreement with our family member about household duties including cleaning dishes after meals, garbage, etc. Our family member will need reminders to be responsible for cleaning their bathroom and cleaning/vacuuming their bedroom.
Provide transportation to and from work and to community activities. Collaborate with our family to take our family member to occasional appointments.
· Support our family member to continue to not consume alcohol. This will include discussions on the consequences of drinking, not ever drinking in front of our family member, not having alcohol in view of our family member in the townhouse, establishing a no tolerance to alcohol consumption and ensuring there is always bottled water in the house to consume.
- Support our family member by being present, open to communicating and discussing issues and answering questions respectfully by guiding in a calm manner. Be available to communicate through texts when needed.
Accountabilities:
- Communication: Build strong and respectful relationships with our family, family member and networks
- Update our family on the overall well being of the our family member and report any events or incidents that occur positive or negative. Communicate in a professional manner.
- Confidentiality: maintain confidentiality at all times
- Interaction: Interact in a non-intrusive, non-threatening, image enhancing and age-appropriate manner.
- Safety: Be aware of physical, social, and recreational environments, and taking action to minimize risks and maximize inclusion
- Documentation: Maintain any documentation as required
- Advocate: Assist our family member to advocate and advocate on their behalf when necessary.
- Participate in semi-annual performance and goal reviews, and mini-planning meetings with our family and our family members support network
Qualifications and Requirements:
- A genuine willingness to want to live with and support our family member as they continue to grow as an independent adult
- A steadfast belief and commitment to inclusion, the right for all people to belong, participate and contribute to the community
- The ability to work independently in unstructured environments and to employ effective time management skills
- Responsiveness and flexibility to the complex and changing needs of an independent adult requiring support
- The ability to demonstrate patience and use thoughtful language in a calm manner
- Ability to collaborate with our family and support network in supporting our family member
- An interest in and the ability to cook nutritious meals
- Coaching and mentorship skills. Lead by example and support our family member to continue learning new skills and develop increasing independence - knowledge of and ability to demonstrate and support the development of skills as they relate to managing a home and social life
- Knowledge of community resources and the ability to support our family members participation and inclusion within their community in accordance with our family members interest and abilities
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license; access to a reliable vehicle and applicable insurance and a clean driver’s abstract
- First Aid and CPR certification is an asset
- Recent Police Check
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $2,500.00-$2,700.00 per month
Schedule:
- Monday to Friday
- Weekends as needed
