Program Overview
SHYM is a program of the YWCA Halifax which provides a safe and supportive living environment for single, vulnerable young mothers (ages 16 to 24) and their children in a 9-unit apartment complex. SHYM also provides individual case management and group programming that helps young moms, and their children develop the skills they need to build strong families in a safe, encouraging environment. SHYM Second Stage provides safe, affordable, supported housing for 5 women led, single parent families.
Live-in staff provide overnight on call coverage from 9pm-9am on a week on week off basis (7 nights on and 7 off). The Live-in staff are on call to the SHYM families in case of emergencies of both a support and facility nature.
This position shares duties with SHYM staff team and is responsible to provide emergency support to families of SHYM, including overnight on-call shifts. The Coordinator is also responsible to provide a clean and safe living environment for families.
Role of the Live-in Residence Coordinator
Advance the vision and mission of the YWCA Halifax.
Building Management:
- Clean and maintain common areas as needed while on shift, including helping clean vacant units
- Identifies, evaluates, and reports risks associated with the building, takes appropriate actions to address or alleviate risk, completes incident reports, and reports these to the Housing Manager
- Performs monthly facility fire and safety checks
Program Management:
- Manages communication path for all current tenant inquiries, passes information on to appropriate YWCA SHYM staff, and/or responds accordingly
- Respects the confidentiality of all families and ensures that all information is kept confidential
- Maintain written logs
- Maintain written and verbal communication regarding emergency incidents or situations with families
- Must be available for emergency and on call duties
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Must have current First Aid/CPR and NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) training
- Subject to Criminal Records check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and Child Abuse Registry Search
- Must possess cultural awareness and sensitivity, be flexible, demonstrate sound work ethics, and deal with families, staff, and others in a positive, courteous, and respectful manner
- Must have experience working with confidentiality guidelines and maintain a high degree of professionalism at all times
- Must be able to set and maintain professional boundaries
- Must be comfortable working in a women and children only building and from a women-centered perspective
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to model healthy living and decision-making
- Experience caring for small children
- Experience acting in a supportive role
