ABOUT WILLIAMS LAKE FIRST NATION (WLFN)


The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN), or the T’exelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today, the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane, in nearby Williams Lake, BC, and across the globe.

POSITION

Under the guidance of the Director of Natural Resources, the SJM Research Assistant is responsible for accessing professional care, daily management, and maintenance of the SJM investigation archives, including its organization, preservation, and storage.


Employment Type

This is a 1-year full-time term position. 35 hours per week from 8:30am-4:30pm with a one-hour unpaid lunch.


Probation Period

3 months from the date of hire.


Education Required

  • Archival/Museum background/online databases/paralegal
  • Undergraduate degree in history, museum studies, library science, archival management, or related field.

Experience Required

  • Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in a closely related field

Overtime Status

Non-exempt.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Prioritize inquiries and requests while troubleshooting conflicts; make judgments and recommendations to ensure smooth day-to-day engagements.
  • Assist in organizing and describing records in accordance with professional standards by maintaining catalogs, indexes, guides, and other tools for understanding, accessing, and using archives.
  • Maintain digital filing of all archival records.
  • Perform conservation work such as protection and repair of archival materials.
  • Collaborate with the SJM Team to summarize and transcribe interviews.
  • Maintain accurate records of interviews, safeguarding the confidentiality of subjects, as necessary.
  • Collecting, assembling, summarizing, analyzing, and interpreting data.
  • Provide ready access to all data for the Director of Natural Resources.
  • Considerable independence of judgment and action is exercised within the guidelines and priorities established by the supervisor.
  • Respond to emails relating to research.
  • Attend project meetings.
  • Assist and collaborate with project planning and prioritization.
  • Prepare progress reports.
  • Coordinate and assist in the production of various archival publications such as brochures and web pages.
  • Maintains WLFN's policy of Confidentiality, Code of Conduct, and other policies and procedures.
  • Supports the mission, vision, and values of Williams Lake First Nation.
  • Contributes to the WLFN’s ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Knowledge of Williams Lake First Nation community, traditions, teachings, culture, protocols, and practices.
  • Proficient use of information technologies (computers, mobile devices, etc) including Microsoft Office Suite, presentation development tools, online education programs, and social media channels.
  • Understand and apply the techniques of archival operations and research methods.
  • Knowledge of digital records preservation techniques and standards.
  • Excellent communication skills in verbal and written formats.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent organizational, analytic, and interpretive skills.
