The AIDS Committee of Newfoundland and Labrador (ACNL) is currently recruiting dynamic and enthusiastic individuals as Casual/Relief Residential Counsellors in the Tommy Sexton Centre Short-Term Emergency Shelter.
Successful candidates must be available to work 8-hour shifts on evenings, overnights, and weekends. This position reports directly to the Shelter Services Coordinator.
Accountabilities/Duties include:
- Individualized assistance to residents seeking and securing safe, affordable, appropriate housing options
- Providing supportive counselling and crisis counselling, as well as assistance with life skills development, resource linkage, and system navigation to residents from a Harm Reduction perspective
- Advocating to government and community agencies with and/or on behalf of residents
- Completing and maintaining logs and records as required and ensuring confidentiality
- Providing a supportive, person-centred, trauma-informed environment that enables a successful transition towards independent housing
- Assisting with daily activities within the shelter such as meal preparation, cleaning, room preparation, and general maintenance and upkeep
Qualifications:
- Relevant university degree or college diploma (i.e. social sciences, social work, CYC); relevant experience will be considered in lieu of degree or diploma
- Demonstrated understanding of/experience with issues related to work with adults (16+) regarding housing and homelessness, Harm Reduction services, mental health and addictions, corrections, and HIV/Hepatitis C
- Experience working with diverse populations in a residential setting is an asset
- Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication, and organizational skills
- Ability to work well independently in a single-staff environment and as team member
- Knowledge of relevant community and government agencies and resources
- Demonstrated knowledge of gender and sexuality diversity
- Standard First Aid
- ASIST Certification
- Trauma-Informed Practice training is considered an asset
- RNC Certificate of Conduct
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention/Therapeutic Crisis Intervention
