Description

The Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Lab Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Conducting molecular biology analyses, including chromatin immunoprecipitation, histone extraction, western blotting, ELISA, RT-qPCR, cloning, flow cytometry and CRISPR
  • Conducting in vivo mouse experiments including xenografting, tissue collection and drug administration, either independently or under the direction of the Principal Investigator and/or other lab members
  • Perform murine tissue dissection and sectioning
  • Establishing and maintaining mammalian tissue cultures
  • Preparing media for mammalian cell culture
  • Making up basic laboratory stock solutions (e.g. TE, TBS, PBS, ethanol solutions, SDS-PAGE sample and running buffers, agarose gel loading dyes, paraformaldehyde, antibiotic stocks etc.)
  • Keeping common areas and 'clean' areas (e.g. mammalian tissue culture hoods and incubators) tidy and clean

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in science in biochemistry / molecular biology required, a master's degree in science is preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in a molecular biology wet laboratory, and/or wet lab experience in university-level courses
  • 1 to 3 years of related technical experience within the research specialty field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in performing mammalian tissue culture procedures and molecular biology/epigenetics research procedures is required
  • Previous experience performing in vivo mouse work including xenografting and drug administration experience would be an asset
  • Must be open to learning and development, and be willing to accept new challenges and assignments
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication, written and organizational skills
  • Previous experience in grant and manuscript writing would be an asset
  • Perform detailed design, documentation, and implementation of moderately complex technological systems
  • Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
  • Provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
  • Knowledge of theory and practical application of technical procedures
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint)
