Position Summary:
The Trottier Space Institute (TSI) at McGill University is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to support and contribute to the Institute’s diverse and interdisciplinary research initiatives. This role involves close collaboration with TSI faculty, researchers, students, and technical staff in the development, implementation, and reporting of research projects. The RA will play a crucial role in supporting strategic research initiatives and research grant proposals and serve as a key point of contact for vendors and external partners. The RA will liaise with the Director, other TSI staff, the University, and funders for research related endeavours.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with TSI researchers in development of processes and procedures for conducting research with undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs and technical staff. This includes identifying research needs across diverse scientific domains and facilitating connections between internal experts to foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Collaborate with TSI researchers with writing of research project reports, documents, and updates as needed in the development, implementation, and results phases.
- Develop understanding of TSI overall researchers’ goals and methodologies, research-related and funding-related landscapes in Canada and worldwide.
- Develop, implement, and oversee new TSI research project plans and monitor progress toward desired outcomes. Ensures research outcomes are identified, discussed and interpreted.
- Establish research project proposal development schedules, ensure conformance to plans, and revise as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements. This involves planning related to research infrastructure, methodologies, and resource requirements across a range of scientific domains.
- Collaborate with TSI researchers in identification, preparation and utilization of research spaces at McGill and elsewhere.
- Work with TSI researchers with writing of research project reports, documents, and updates as needed in the development, implementation, and results phases.
- Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of research staff and participates in their training, including Research Assistants and Undergraduate/Graduate Student Research Assistants.
- Assist Director in development and maintaining of Institute policies and activities.
- Oversee TSI budgets and ensure planning and tracking of expenses and annual reporting in consultation with the Director.
- Maintain vendor relationships and direct procurement needed for research project proposal development, implementation, and completion.
- Assist Director in monitoring the new TSI Annex construction (2025-2026) and support the smooth transition to the new facility.
Qualifications:
- PhD degree in a Science related field (Physics, Astronomy is preferred).
- Minimum of 5 years experience in a research and/or academic environment.
- Ability to recommend and implement improvements to research methods and processes.
- Proven ability to manage special projects, including planning, execution, and evaluation, ensuring successful completion within scope and time.
- Excellent analytical, and problem-solving and negotiation skills.
- Ability to train and coach staff and students with a view to accomplishing joint initiatives.
- Proven experience in budget forecasting, managing funds, analysis.
- Advanced proficiency working in a Microsoft tools environment, including spreadsheets. Advanced excel skills required.
- Knowledge of Linux environment and Python programming is an asset.
- Bilingual, excellent oral and written communication skills in both English and French.
- Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 4 on a scale of 0-4.
