Research Associate
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of Professor Stephen Yue, we are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate to join our team at the McGill-NRC Advanced Cold Spray Additive Manufacturing facility located in Boucherville. The successful candidate will focus on developing innovative metallic powder capabilities tailored for cold spray additive manufacturing.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The tasks of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
- Develop and implement methodologies for synthesizing powders of various alloy materials using an ultrasonic powder atomizer (UPA).
- Develop and implement methodologies for modifying various powder materials using a Physical Vacuum Deposition (PVD) powder reactor.
- Establish a conditioning and management system for the produced or modified cold spray powders.
- Analyze and interpret data to support research objectives and provide actionable insights.
- Engage in collaborative efforts with multidisciplinary teams to facilitate the integration of UPA and PVD reactor technologies into academic research initiatives, including graduate-level projects.
- Investigate and analyze operational challenges associated with the UPA and PVD powder reactor to identify root causes and develop evidence-based solutions.
- Document procedures, methodologies, and results in technical reports, publications, and conference and workshop presentations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Ph.D. degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Physics Engineering or a related field.
- Must have at least five (5) years of experience in the general area of materials processing
- Strong proficiency in operating and optimizing advanced materials processing systems, including physical and chemical vapor deposition equipment, powder atomizers, and related technologies, within experimental and development frameworks
- Possess hands-on experience in handling and characterizing metallic powders within experimental and process development contexts
- Demonstrate analytical problem-solving skills to diagnose and address equipment-related issues, consulting with external technical experts or suppliers when necessary to support research continuity
- Possess foundational knowledge of materials characterization techniques and their application in experimental analysis and data interpretation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
