VISION:


At the Ontario Native Women’s Association (ONWA), we celebrate and honour the safety and healing of Indigenous Women and Girls as they take up their leadership roles in the family, community, provincially, nationally and internationally for generations to come.


SCOPE:


The Research Assistant will provide overall support and assistance to ONWA’s Policy and Research Portfolio. The Research Assistant will assist with community-based research and engagements and will conduct analyses of local, provincial, and national policies, programs, initiatives, and economic trends that affect Indigenous women and their families in Ontario. The Research Assistant will collaborate with Researchers and staff working on data projects to prepare information packages, tool kits, and research reports. They will assist in gathering data through various Indigenous methodologies, conduct gap analysis, and develop preliminary outcome indicators to measure Indigenous women's safety, integrating social and economic determinants. The Research Assistant will participate in working groups on pertinent issues impacting Indigenous women and their families in Ontario. They will bring to the attention of the Project Manager current developments in provincial and federal policies that affect Indigenous women and their families.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • A post-secondary diploma/degree and a minimum of 3-5 years work experience in the area of Social Science, Indigenous studies, Public Health Administration, Epidemiology, women studies or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Proven work experience related to research.
  • Knowledge of the corporate nature, government systems and administration and the ability to interact with other government departments, Indigenous organizations, and communities.
  • Knowledge of and experience working for Not-For Profit Organizations.
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management and presentation skills with the ability to follow through on assigned duties independently within strict deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge of Indigenous methodologies and qualitative and quantitative research methodologies in relation to research and evaluation, literature reviews and environmental scans, performance measurement, and data governance with a focus on enhancing research outcomes and ensuring cultural relevance and sensitivity.
  • Excellent written and oral communications, with emphasis on keen listening and ability to effectively interpret verbal and non-verbal communications to meet the needs of prospective community members.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office; competency working with other databases.
  • Experience working with Indigenous community, knowledge of Indigenous cultures and traditions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current issues facing Indigenous Women and their families, including gender-based violence and Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).
  • Proven knowledge of analytical techniques including gap analysis and gender-based analysis.
  • Knowledge of principles of Indigenous data sovereignty practices, OCAP© training is an asset.
  • Understanding of the social determinants of health is an asset.
  • Ability to speak an Indigenous Language is considered an asset.
  • Current, valid vulnerable sector criminal records check. Valid 1st Aid/CPR.
  • Ability to travel.
  • A cellular phone and internet access is required within this position.
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible working from home arrangement if required. This may include a combination of virtual remote work in your home and in office arrangements. This will be based on operational needs and will be determined by the ONWA.
  • Must be dependable, able to follow instructions, respond to management direction and be able to improve performance through management feedback.
  • Cultural competency:
    • Experience working with Indigenous organizations an asset.
    • Experience working with Indigenous communities with a working knowledge of Indigenous cultures and traditions.
  • ONWA is committed on implementing measures to protect its community members, staff, and other stakeholders from COVID-19. As a result, ONWA has implemented a mandatory vaccination policy. Exemptions will be made for those with a valid medical exemption; proof of the exemption will be required.

The full salary range for this role is $56,400 - $69, 405 ONWA conducts annual performance reviews, and employees may be eligible for salary adjustments based on performance outcomes and available funding.
