PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
Do you thrive in high pressure/ high stress situations, enjoy planning, and use effective communication to give directions? If so the Rail Traffic Controller (RTC) position may be for you! This is a safety critical position that offers exceptional challenges as you plan train movements through a geographical region in the safest and most efficient manner. In this role you will make business decisions, solve problems, and coordinate with various departments to ensure minimal train delays.
SCHEDULE
The Operations Centre is in 24/7 environment. RTCs are Scheduled according to their collective agreement based on seniority. The schedule for this role includes shift work, nights, weekends, holidays and may be subject to shortchanges (i.e. work a day shift, have 8 hours off, then work a night shift) and short notice of schedule changes. New RTCs will work a dynamic schedule as a spare for several years prior to working a set schedule.
TRAINING
The selected applicants will learn the business from the ground up through a 6 month training program that prepares you to be a Rail Traffic Controller and future careers within CPKC.
The cutoff to apply is September 2, 2025, and training is expected to begin December 2025.
Successful applicants will be invited to an info session and Interview taking place in Calgary & Montreal.
The position is based in Calgary. Moving expenses are the responsibility of the applicant and not covered or reimbursed by CPKC
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Ensuring that the safety of employees and the public is protected while maintaining 100% focus and compliance on safety critical tasks
- Must be proficient in rules established by the Calgary Operations Centre all under CROR (Canadian Rail Operating Rules) and practices
- Facilitate emergency response and other unexpected events
- Coordinate train meets to optimize railway performance and enter data into various information and control systems
- Always maintain an ongoing awareness of the operation to take accountability, and work in a high stress and fast-paced environment
- Participate in on-the-job safety audits that are conducted on a frequent basis to ensure safety rules are understood and implemented according to standard
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Graduation or General Equivalency
- Fluent in French and English both written and verbal preferred
- Maintain focus on one critical function at a time while juggling multiple priorities
- Ability to take accountability, and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent planning, oral and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills
- Must successfully complete company training program
- Must become qualified in the Canadian Rail Operating Rules and other regulations
- Demonstrated effective decision making, planning, and scheduling skills
- Must be able to work shift work- which includes night shift, shortchanges, weekends and holidays for up to 12 hours per shift
