Cool Aid Community Health Centre is seeking a full or part time Primary Care Physician. The physician provides client centered primary health care services to individuals and communities who face structural barriers to accessing health services and who experience a wide range of acute and chronic health challenges. The physician will use a harm reduction approach while collaborating with clients living in poverty, with chronic mental illness and/or substance use issues. The successful applicant must have an understanding of the principles of culturally competent and trauma informed care.
The physician’s primary role is to assess and diagnose acute and chronic disease/illness and to provide treatment and follow-up. Related responsibilities include prescribing and refilling medications, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, providing management of chronic disease and referrals to specialists.
The patient panel for a full time (1680 hours per year) physician within a CHC providing primary and addictions care, is 650 patients. Patients are rostered to the CHC, and the physicians are named as MRPs (Most Responsible Providers).
As a Physician on the CHC team, you will work within an innovative not-for-profit, in an environment that is committed to promoting continuous learning, creativity and collaboration. There will be opportunities to work at the main health centre, clinics embedded in supportive housing sites, and in the two mobile outreach vans. In mid-2025 Cool Aid will be opening a second health centre in Victoria where patients will transition from the embedded clinics to the new health centre.
The Cool Aid CHC team includes, at present, a Director/Manager, a health services coordinator, 5 MOAs (Medical Office Assistants), a medical Director, 18 physicians, 17 registered nurses, 2 mental health outreach clinicians, 4 counsellors, and a pharmacy team (embedded in the main downtown site). This team provides in-clinic and outreach care to over 7,000 patients in Greater Victoria. The medical team has expertise in Hepatitis C, PrEP to prevent HIV, opioid agonist therapy, and support groups for chronic conditions such as pain management and Hep C.
