PERMANENT FULL-TIME LANGUAGE ACQUISITION SUPPORT WORKER

This permanent full-time (10 month) position is effective starting on Tuesday September 2, 2025. This is replacing an existing position.
Position Description: The Language Acquisition Support Worker (LASW) will provide language modelling services, including oral/manual (depending on the student's need) to pupils that are deaf and hard of hearing. In addition, the LASW will provide bilingual/bicultural support to aid in the development of American Sign Language/English so that the students build the necessary linguistic and cultural foundations to work with an ASL interpreter. This role also includes preparation of curricular and non-curricular materials, in consultation and collaboration with the classroom teacher and itinerant teacher.
Education and Experience:
- Sign Language Proficiency minimum proficient score of 3 and above preferred
- College diploma in a related field such as Educational Assistant, Early Childhood Education, Youth Care Worker, Child and Youth Worker, or ASL instructor
- Experience in ASL instruction or related experience a minimum of 1 year
- Demonstrate fluency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Knowledge of child and language development
- Knowledge of cross-cultural issues for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
- Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders
- Ability to plan and implement instruction
- Confidentiality of information
- Increase student vocabulary, syntax and critical thinking as it relates to language through modeling, activities, and discourse at the students' linguistic level;
- Help guide student responses, support social interactions as they relate to language and communication in a variety of settings including the classroom, school yard, and field trips;
- Provide educational support in collaboration with the classroom teacher and itinerant teacher as needed;
- Prepare curricular and non-curricular materials including accessible audio materials that have subtitles and closed captioning when required;
- Participate in parent teacher interviews, case conferences and IEP meetings when directed by the principal;
- Establish a physical setting within the learning environment for communication interaction in collaboration with the classroom teacher.
Hours of Work: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, per the school year calendar
Hourly Rate: $34.87 (minimum) to $40.68 (maximum)
Point Band: 12 (Unionized Position)
