About this Opportunity

The University of Victoria invites candidates to apply for the role of Patrol Manager within the Campus Security Services department. This pivotal position reports to the Associate Director Security Services and is suited for those who are passionate about creating and maintaining a safe learning and working environment for students, staff, and faculty.

We welcome candidates with transferable skills who do not come from a traditional Safety or Security background and are able to demonstrate the ability to obtain and maintain Security officer certification. The role provides direct supervision and support to Campus Security Personnel who are responsible for the ensuring that University Policies are followed and establishing meaningful relationships with the campus community. This role includes a rotational shift pattern to ensure management supervision and support to security personnel is available 24/7-365.

The role is responsible for a wide variety of responsibilities in areas such as emergency and crisis response, incident management. The Patrol Manager will ensure follow up and timely reporting of issues of risk and liability. This position will ensure that all clients receive a high level of service excellence. The Patrol Manager is the first after-hours response for Security Officers who may be reporting or dealing with urgent security matters, engaging facilities partners and/or addressing urgent staffing or scheduling needs according to departmental guidelines.

The Patrol Manager is responsible for a team of security personnel as the manager on shift ensuring effective and efficient client service during emergency situations, during response to complex requests for assistance, and identifying proactive prevention strategies related to security and safety programming.

You bring a collaborative mindset that encourages engagement and builds community with a diverse range of partners and establishes meaningful relationships with campus partners. Ideal candidates will bring experience in supervising, coaching and evaluating a team of unionized staff, providing on-going guidance, direction and support to Security Officers in the performance of their day-to-day duties, including responding to non-emergency and emergency incidents.

Strong organizational and communication skills in a variety of platforms are highly valued, along with experience in emergency or crisis situations. The salary range for this position is:

  • Recruitment range: $79,376- $87,518 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
  • Performance range: $103,243 salary range ceiling is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary

Reporting to the Security Manager, the Patrol Manager is one of four front-line positions having leadership responsibilities for all security matters on campus. In cooperation with Campus Security Services senior leadership team, the Patrol Manager will work alongside Security Officers on shift to provide direct supervision and support. The Patrol Manager will have wide responsibilities in areas such as emergency and crisis response, incident management and follow up and timely reporting of issues of risk and liability. This position will ensure that all clients receive a high level of service excellence. The Patrol Manager works a rotating shift consisting of two day shifts up to 12 hours, two night shifts up to 12 hours followed by four days off. This position acts as the first after-hours response for Security Officers who may be reporting or dealing with urgent security issues, facilities issues and/or staffing or scheduling issues and responds as per departmental guidelines. The Patrol Manager also reviews incident reports for follow up. This position will be exposed to traumatic incidents and information related to both general and self- directed violence.

Job Requirements

A minimum of an undergraduate degree, preferably in a related field (e.g. Conflict Resolution, Social Work, Criminology) and a minimum of 4 (four) years of professional experience in related work, including:

  • Crisis and/or emergency response (preferably in a Post Secondary context)
  • Hiring, training, and supervising of staff (preferably in a unionized environment)
  • Working with young adult populations (aged 18-24) on both an individual and communities basis.
  • Knowledge of the international, federal, and provincial regulations related to security.

An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience may be considered.

This position requires:

  • A proven ability to respond to, triage and manage critical incidents.
  • Good judgement and responsiveness in situations of conflict or crisis.
  • High level of self-awareness and established self-care practices.
  • Solid analytical skills and ability to apply sound judgment in problem solving, evaluating courses of action, and making decisions on complex security matters. The ability to deal with confidential and/or potentially conflictual issues with tact, diplomacy and compassion.
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment both as part of a team and independently.
  • Superior leadership and supervisory skills; ability to lead and motivate teams of Security Officers.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills, including ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders and authorities in the context of a critical incident or traumatic event, as well as investigations.
  • Strong administrative skills, including incident and report writing, information and records management.
  • Openness and the ability to work effectively with a diverse population.
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt to a changing and dynamic environment.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the development of a response to student or community conduct or job performance issues.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness in regards to establishing healthy boundaries, stress management and communication skills.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail

In addition, this position requires:

  • The ability to work shift-work rotation, including day, afternoon and night shifts.
  • Criminal Record Check.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License Class 5 or greater
  • BC Security Workers License

The following are considered to be assets:

  • MS Office – Excel, Outlook, Word
  • Knowledge and awareness of collective agreements
  • Knowledge of security operations and security technology
  • Training in areas such as mental health first aid, trauma informed practice, suicide intervention, violence risk assessment; crisis response, CPTED (crime prevention through environmental design) and ICS (incident command system)
