PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Parent-Child Educator works with parents staying in our second stage shelter and accessing Radiance Children’s Center, who have experienced violence and abuse and other traumatic experiences. This role works closely with the Child and Youth worker to ensure the child and parent experience can be supported as a family unit and not seen as a deficit within the child.
WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR...
- Support parents staying in shelter with exploring, learning and implementing positive and healthy strategies to meet their individual children’s physical and social emotional safety needs.
- Support parents in both individual and group settings as they explore and consider new approaches and strategies to their parenting.
- Actively support the physical and emotional wellness of families, leaning into age-appropriate safety planning for parents that includes their children.
- Tend to the parent-child relationship, enhancing and promoting attachment.
- Support families through moments of crisis, highlighting areas of strength, worry and engaging in intensive consultation and planning to reduce distress and ultimately risk within the family.
- Execute parent and family based, researched tools, supporting parents and their children who have experienced violence and abuse.
- Work in collaboration within the shelter multi-disciplinary team to ensure parent and child presenting and emerging needs are being met.
- Develop and coordinate transition plans alongside families, meeting their unique needs as they move out of shelter.
- Leverage formal and informal consultation opportunities within Radiance and with external partners as appropriate.
- Actively participate in individual supervisions, staff meetings, all staff meetings and other agency led events with a bend to ongoing learning and overall professional development.
- Ensure all agency client facing interventive and evaluative tools, including the timeline of practice are adhered to, ensuring consistency in the client experience throughout a families stay.
- Work with parents to understand their child’s unique age and stage of development needs through a trauma informed lens, providing support and strategies for parents to respond in a meaningful way.
- Ensure client files meet best practice and agency standards, reflecting an accurate, non-judgmental account of the client experience and our work with them.
- Ensure consistent adherence to the social work code of ethics, identifying and consulting on ethical and other complex situations with Radiance leadership in a timely manner.
- Commitment to reflective practice and a growth mindset both within your role, as well as a broader lens as a professional within the field.
- Maintain current standing with professional associations (i.e., Alberta College of Social Workers (ACSW), Association of Counselling Therapy in Alberta, etc.). highlighting the Professional Code of Conduct and Professional Ethics directly related to our work.
- Actively support and participate in Radiance program special events impacting both parents and children. This can include Mother’s Day events, cultural events, etc.
- Promote Radiance Family Society’s image by acting as an ambassador of the agency.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS REQUIRED...
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Social Work is required.
- Experience working with family violence, trauma, addictions, and mental illness an asset.
- 2+ years of experience working with parents and families in a related field.
- Brain Story & trauma informed practice certifications are a requirement, within first 3 months of employment.
- Knowledge of the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences– ACEs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams
- Proven skills to work with vulnerable population are required.
- ASSIST and Self harm training an asset.

- Clear Police Security Check & Vulnerable Sector Check maintained.
- Clear Child Intervention Check maintained.
- Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C maintained.
- Standing, bending, crouching, and able to lift to 50lb required.
- Tuesday – Saturday: 10:30am – 6:30pm.
- Indoor and outdoor activities.
- This role is not eligible for Hybrid Remote work.
