Paid on Call Firefighter - Redwater
Sturgeon County is seeking up to four (4) Paid On-Call Firefighters to join us at Station 7, Redwater. The primary responsibilities of this position as a Probationary Firefighter are firefighter training and formal courses, emergency response, and vehicle/equipment maintenance. There is room for advancement as training is completed!
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Training (80%)
- Successfully completes initial three (3) month probationary period (October to December).
- Attends regular evening training, formal courses (weeknights and weekends) and continuing competency education events as required.
- Enrolls and successfully completes the following mandatory courses during their probationary period:
- NFPA 1001 Level 1
- NFPA 1072 Awareness
- Standard First Aid/Level C CPR/AED
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- ICS 100
- Meets attendance targets for continued service of 60% of training nights.
Emergency Response (15%)
- Responds to emergency calls under close supervision.
- Maintains firefighting equipment and apparatus.
- Reports to his/her station officers, hours spent on emergency response calls, weekly training classes, and any formal courses which they have been directed to attend.
- Meets attendance targets for continued service of 20% of emergency calls.
Other (5%)
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Station Officers or his/her designate or Sturgeon County Emergency Services Command Staff.
- Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.
KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE
- Live within 10km of the Redwater fire station.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Class 5 Drivers License
- Good organizational skills
- Basic computer skills
- Maintain confidentiality
- Good communication skills (both verbal and written)
- Confident and able to work under pressure in stressful situations
- Team player capable of working in a team environment
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL EFFORTS
- Probationary firefighters are not permitted to work or train alone at any time.
- Emergency or fire response work environment will have a firefighter wearing heavy PPE, breathing apparatus, and gear, working in environments that are exposed to smoke and extreme temperature fluctuations.
- This position will work at heights and in confided or dark spaces.
- The work is conducted in an office or office-like environment when not on emergency or fire response.
- The working environment involves emergency situations and can be emotionally demanding and stressful.
- This position is a safety sensitive position as it operates emergency response equipment and responds to emergency and fire incidents.
- The work is physically demanding and often involves short periods of intense physical labour, with the requirement to lift, carry, or pull over 50 pounds (over 22 kilograms) frequently during emergency situations.
- Often have to work at heights and in confined or dark spaces.
