Slingshot Transportation Inc. is expanding again! We have an exciting opportunity for an OPS Manager to join our operations team in Calgary, AB.

Modified Work Schedule: This position involves working days: Monday to Friday as well as on-call as needed.

Salary range: $85,000.00 - $100,000.00 depending on experience

Position Purpose:

1. Provide strong leadership to Calgary Operations including supervisors, dispatchers, drivers, and yard staff.

2. Oversee the functions of Slingshot Calgary operations to ensure the efficient and effective use of all resources and equipment.

3. Establish, forge and maintain strong relationships with key customers, suppliers and vendors

4. Responsible for improving performance, productivity, efficiency, and profitability through the implementation of effective methods and strategies.

5. Contribute to the development and implementation of organizational strategies, policies, and procedures.

6. Safeguard the efficiency of the company’s operations to facilitate accelerating development and long-term success.

7. Consult with the Equipment Supervisor and Safety & Compliance Dept. to ensure all equipment and Drivers meet MTO & DOT safety & compliance requirements.

8. Lead IT needs of Slingshot Calgary with the assistance of Terminal Manager, Calgary

9. Responsible for identifying, addressing and resolving escalated issues or challenges

10. Regularly review standard operating procedures and ensure compliance.

Dispatch & Leadership

· Train, measure and correct all direct reports to ensure high quality job performance

· Provide effective performance feedback through employee recognition, rewards, and disciplinary action, annual performance reviews with the assistance of Human Resources Manager, when necessary.

· Develop and maintain strong relationships with customers, vendors, and all personnel.

· Build and maintain a positive work environment where team members and their contributions are recognized and valued.

· Monitor driver’s hours to ensure they are compliant with the ministry and free from violations.

· Support the direction of daily work activity and priorities for the dispatch team.

· Participate in the day-to-day dispatch operations to ensure all loads are completed per customer required

· Ensure staff are doing their jobs correctly, thoroughly, with clear expectations and goals.

· Accomplish staff results by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; developing, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, procedures, and productivity standards.

· Maintain employee work schedules including assignments, job rotation, training, vacations and paid time off, telecommuting, cover for absenteeism, and overtime scheduling.

· Delegate responsibility, expect accountability and regular feedback.

· Regularly liaise with Terminal Manager and/or HR Manager, Canada to address driver related needs, issues, or concerns.

· Generate employee evaluations for all direct reports.

Operations

· Interacting with company management, supervisors, and various staff to ensure smooth and effective operating practices and results.

· Liaising with superiors to make decisions for operational activities and set strategic goals.

· Planning and monitoring the day-to-day running of the facilities to ensure smooth operations.

· Maintain a safe working environment

· Support Dispatch on all software applications

· Oversee the day-to-day work of yard coordinators in Dufferin Place.

· Follow and enforce all procedures including Progressive Discipline for staff as required.

· Contribute to all improvements, i.e. processes, procedures and policies.

· Contribute to generating and implementing rates

· Support all levels of billing approval

· Support training of staff as required

· Oversee of Calgary Operation IT needs – including but not limited to; Cameras and corresponding software, Microsoft 365, ADP, Exspeedite, Motive, office equipment such as laptops, printers, scanners etc.

· Liaise with external IT provider and General Management to identify and resolve any IT related items.

Safety & Compliance

· Ensure compliance with local laws and regulations.

· Hold regular meetings with Equipment Supervisor, Milton, Driver Supervisor, Milton & Assistant General Manager, Canada to ensure best practice

· Manage day-to-day requirements of contracts to ensure safety, compliance, and customer satisfaction

· Maintain an effective working relationship with staff and clients

· Monitor the work of various departments and provide constructive feedback to Terminal Manager, Calgary.

· Provide technical support, including IT, software, and camera systems

· Regular meetings with department supervisors to understand the needs of the departments and assist with the creation of plans for improvement

· Oversee and coordinate with management to ensure employees are performing efficiently and effectively

· Assist in the development of policies and procedures to ensure clear guidelines throughout the company.

· Accurately report mileage as required by Safety & Compliance within expected time frames

· Oversee the reporting of accidents to ensure proper procedure and maintenance of records

· Investigation of damages ensuring proper reporting and progressive discipline as required

· Monitor and report any driver safety and compliance concerns to Terminal Manager, Calgary

· Meet with driver(s) and Equipment & Yard Supervisor to review Motive safety events and driver related issues or concerns. Consult with HR Department regarding any disciplinary actions.

Health & Safety

· Enforce policies to establish a culture of health & safety

· Maintaining a positive and inclusive work environment

· Evaluate practices, procedures, and the facility to assess risk and adherence to the law.

· Ensure Calgary JHSC representative has completed monthly building/Yard inspections and submitted to HR Manager, Canada

Equipment

· Oversee equipment (tractors, trailers, office) maintenance procurement

· Ensure proper review of Equipment Inspections for conformity and that required repairs are completed effectively

· Investigate and assess all reported equipment defects, and initiate repairs as per policies

· Liaise with Dispatch/vendors to arrange for maintenance, spare vehicles and ensure repairs are completed as required.

· Ensure proper reporting of new or returned equipment to Michigan, while keeping up to date records

· Investigation of damages ensuring proper reporting and progressive discipline as required

· Oversee Container and ordering of driver supplies

· Ensuring all trailers are inspected every 90 days

· Ensure truck assignments are completed and records retained by policy.

Other Duties:

· Support the efforts of the sales team by providing operational support as required.

· Perform emergency duties, including dispatch support, during high volume call times and staffing shortages.

· Performing other duties as assigned from time to time by General Management.

· Contribute to all improvements, i.e. processes, procedures and policies.

Qualifications:

Knowledge

· Strong knowledge in the transportation industry including tractors and trailers and their required maintenance and repairs

· Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and 365

· Strong knowledge of smartphone and tablet devices

· Adequate knowledge of organizational effectiveness and operations management.

· Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization.

Skills and Abilities

· Ability to work in a team environment in high pressure situations.

· Strong written and oral communication skills are essential

· Ability to listen, speak and communicate effectively, often in some state of distress.

· High degree of proficiency in MS Excel and MS Word.

· Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.

· Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment.

· Strong ability to multitask

· Ability to effectively delegate and monitor required tasks

· Strong discretion and judgment

· Capable of high-level strategic thinking

· Ability to lead groups and work well with people if diverse skill levels and backgrounds

· Excellent delegation, monitoring, customer service, leadership, and inspirational skills

· Strong organizational skills including the ability to multitask effectively to implement multiple projects and deadlines

Other Requirements

· Minimum of 5 years Operations Management within a Transportation & Logistics Company

· Ability to provide after-hours and weekend support when necessary

· Reliable vehicle

· Valid Alberta Driver’s License

· Must have a proven record of managing a minimum of 15 direct reports
