Turning Point is a progressive, non-profit organization actively engaged in changing the conversation surrounding drug use, people who use drugs, homelessness, HIV and vulnerable populations. Position: NightReach Outreach Worker
Play a key role in the provision of harm reduction outreach services, including:
- Develop/maintain trusting, caring, non-judgmental and supportive relationships with street-involved people and access NightReach services
- Provide support including:
- Psycho-social support
- Harm reduction materials and information (e.g. safer drug use and safer sex)
- Social service and health referrals
- Advocacy
- Respond to needle debris clean up and/or support as needed in the community
Community
- Support the participation of individuals affected by addictions and related issues in all aspects of Turning Point
- Promote and facilitate the participation of target populations in regional and provincial activities
- Create awareness about harm reduction and related issues in the community
- Teach interested people about Turning Point and refer individuals to internal Turning Point programs
- Positively represent Turning Point in the community
- Participate in regional and provincial meetings and consultations
- Referrals to addictions, mental health, and other community services
General Duties
- Contribute to the work of the cohesive multi-disciplinary team
- Participate in staff meetings
- Foster a safe environment through the development of healthy therapeutic relationships
- Ensure the safety of self, partner, and the community as a whole
- Respond to a variety of emergencies
- Support people in crisis and/or employ de-escalation practices
- Adhere to established goals and objectives
- Maintain current knowledge and skills
- Attend agency functions as required
- Other duties as necessary
Program Development, Evaluation and Reporting:
- Data collection and entry
- Motivate programming and policy change to be inclusive of our target populations
- Meet regularly with supervisor for consultation and activity updates
Qualifications:
- A diploma in social sciences, health or related field and/or a combination of education and work experience is preferable
- Experience working with marginalized individuals
- Commitment to harm reduction principals
- Knowledge, experience or willingness to learn about substance dependence , drug practice and culture, communicable diseases, sexual health, vulnerable populations, affected populations, mental health, and concurrent disorders
- Flexibility, creativity, motivation, enthusiasm and an inclusive and equitable non-judgmental attitude
- Ability to demonstrate self-awareness of own beliefs and biases
- Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team setting
- Ability to work evenings and weekends
- Valid CPR/First Aid
- Training in suicide intervention, non-violent crisis intervention, and FOIP is an asset
- Fluency in English and written communication skills
- Physically fit, able to carry up to 50 pounds while walking for long distances (upwards to 15km per shift)
- This position requires year-round outdoor work in all weather conditions and in various terrain (pavement, trails, treed areas)
