National Representative/Organizer
Job Overview:
Canada’s leading private-sector union, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW Canada), is seeking a National Representative to join its National Organizers team in Eastern provinces.
The successful applicant will meet with members of UFCW Canada, other members of the labour movement, community and faith-based groups, the public, and with employers for the purpose of furthering UFCW Canada’s growth objectives including worker advocacy, organizing workers, and taking the necessary steps together with UFCW Canada to generally improve the living standards and working lives of all workers. The successful applicant will be based in the province of Nova Scotia and be required to travel as needed to cover other provinces as may be determined from time to time.
Primary responsibilities:
- Meeting with workers that are interested in joining our union and explaining the process of union organizing
- Counselling prospective members by educating them on their rights and giving them clear and factual answers
- Identifying key community and/or workplace leaders
- Identifying possible targets to unionize
- Maintaining regular contact with prospective members
- Maintaining progress reports
- Facilitating small group discussions on unionizing, health and safety, and other work related issues
- Attending to the day-to-day operations of UFCW organizing hubs
- Strategizing & developing a plan for workers to bring the union to their workplace.
- Evaluating campaigns
- Liaise with leaders from faith and community groups
- Establishing new and innovative methods to engage workers
- Signing union membership cards
- Creating, updating information in database
- Preparing and completing case work, benefit claims and union certification
- Other duties as assigned
Education & Experience:
- A Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma in social sciences or related discipline or related working experience is preferred
- Prior experience working on union organizing campaigns
Skills & qualifications:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills are a must
- Ability to speak other languages is an asset
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
- Basic understanding of labour law
- Familiarity with the unionization process
- Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint and Word. Knowledge of SugarCRM is an asset.
- Ability and willingness to use social media platforms such as: Facebook, Twitter and others, to promote our Union and its campaigns
- A valid driver’s license with reasonable insurability is necessary
