Municipal Law Enforcement Officer I
Permanent, Full-time Position
The Township of Springwater, located in the heart of Simcoe County, is a mixed urban/rural municipality with growing urban settlements and a prosperous agricultural sector. The municipality is currently recruiting for a permanent, full-time position of Municipal Law Enforcement Officer I.
Reporting to the Manager of Municipal Law Enforcement, the position is responsible for enforcing municipal by-laws and performing related duties on behalf of the Township.
Position Responsibilities
The usual responsibilities of the position are:
- Investigating complaints received from the public about alleged violations of various municipal by-laws.
- Enforcing sections of the Highway Traffic Act, the Municipal Act, Dog Owners Liability Act and the Provincial Offences Act in order to ensure an increased degree of safety for our residents and visitors.
- Achieving compliance through three key stages of information, education, and enforcement as a last effort to achieve compliance to preserve the quality of life to which each our residents are entitled rather than penalize the citizens or visitors.
- Enforcing regulatory by-laws within the boundaries of the municipality.
- Researching and preparing correspondence, court materials and attendance at Court when required.
- Processing Business License Applications, attending properties for inspection purposes when appropriate for the purpose of licensing, and issuing licenses to applicants.
- Processing Sign Applications and distributing to various Departments for approval.
- Performing Animal Control duties including picking up stray dog(s), transporting to pound facility and/or veterinarian offices as appropriate.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
- Successful completion of a Community College Diploma in Law and Security, Police Foundations, or related field.
- Minimum of two years’ direct municipal law enforcement experience or significant related experience.
- Currently possess or can obtain a Municipal Law Enforcement Officer Certificate (MLEO), Property Standards Certificate (OAPSO) and Valid First Aid/CPR Certificate.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Municipal Act, Provincial Offences Act, Dog Owners Liability Act, municipal by-laws, and other related legislation and regulations as they may apply to the Corporation.
- Excellent notetaking, problem-solving, interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution, and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and act in a confident and professional manner under stressful situations, including providing evidence in court, and responding promptly to customer needs.
- Strong computer skills using MS Office applications, including Word and Excel.
- Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality of information is critical.
- Hold a valid Class ‘G’ driver’s license in good standing with a satisfactory driving record.
- Ability to work a variety of shifts, including afternoon, evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays.
- Ability to participate as an effective team member within the Clerk’s and By-law Department and across the organization.
- Due to the responsibilities of this position, as a condition of employment you will be required to have a Police Information Check with an additional Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the Township before commencement of this position.
Rate of Pay
The Township of Springwater offers a competitive salary and a comprehensive employee benefit plan, including participation in the OMERS pension plan for this position. Compensation for this position is currently $64,346.67 to $75,276.50 (2025 rate).
Hours of Work
This position will work 35 hours per week and be required to work a rotational shift, including afternoons, weekends and statutory holidays.
