Job Title: Assistant Teacher

Essential Job Function:

• Assist the classroom teacher
• Allow children to learn from their own discoveries and draw their own conclusions. Rather than supplying children with answers, ask how they would solve the problem.
• Actively engage children in the learning process and enhance critical thinking skills.
• Have a general understanding of art, music, math, geography, language, geometry, and practical life works.
• Support and motivate the children.
• Observe children.
• Avoid using rewards and punishments for good or poor work.
• Never criticize or interfere in a child’s work.

Reports to: Authentic Montessori Academy’s Principal

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Help to manage the learning experiences for students.
• Meet the emotional, social and physical needs of each child in the classroom.
• Help track progress for each student as requested.
• Complete accident (incident) reports as required.
• Assist students toward self-directed learning and normalization.
• Assist children with dressing and undressing, hygiene and hand washing.
• Changes diapers and assist children with toilet learning.
• Maintain a neat, well organized, and attractive prepared environment.
• Keep daily log reporting anything note worthy from the day.
• Maintain confidentiality.
• Maintain a safe and healthy environment in accordance with the CCEYA
• Attend Professional Activity Days.
• Attend Open House events as requested by the School Principal.
• Attend pre-announced staff meetings and professional sessions, including evening staff and parent meetings – at the request of the School Principal.
• Attend pre-announced events organized for families including evening and weekend events - at the request of the School Principal.
• Work to develop effective relationships with parents.
• Maintain cleanliness of classroom and classroom materials - including but not limited to, shelves, material in classroom, teacher’s cupboards, sinks, floors, and toilets.
• Keep all appropriate records such as attendance, time sheets, disinfecting records, cleaning records, playground inspection and toileting records.
• Meet all applicable licensing regulations.
• Participate in professional activities designated by the School Principal, which may include workshops, meetings, planning, and other professional pursuits.
• Follow the school’s policies and procedures for student evaluation and record keeping, meeting all due dates as required.

Weekly Tasks

• Double check all learning materials.
• Remove all items that need repair, replacement, cleaning, and disinfecting.
• Rotate books.
• Note needed janitorial services.
• Update personal notes.
• Meet with co-workers/School Principal to share ideas, plan and problem solve.
• Participate in parent education when requested.
• Prepare for school’s community activities such as open houses, observation and all general meetings or special events

Related Duties

• Help complete and maintains all records, reports, evaluations, and inventories of student records in a timely manner as may be required by the school.
• The teacher is responsible for reading and adhering to the guidelines as established in the employee handbook and adhering to all school policies.

Qualifications:

• RECE, Educational Assistant, Teacher’s Aide Certificate or Montessori Diploma.
• Knowledge of child development and understanding the child’s mind.
• Knowledge of Montessori pedagogy would be an asset.
• Experience with preschool aged children.

Working Conditions:

Children are to be given outdoor time twice per day, weather permitting, and they are to be accompanied by qualified staff. You will be required to be outdoors with the children at times.

Physical Requirements:

When assisting in the classroom you shall be required to assist children with toileting routines when assistance is needed.

Strength Guidelines - The Directress will most likely not have to do much lifting but occasionally may have to lift a maximum of 25 lbs.

Motion Parameters - The range of motion required for the position includes but is not limited to, standing for up to one hour, climbing stairs, walking, squatting, kneeling.

Vision and Hearing Requirements - For the safety of the children and all staff of AMA, the Directress is required to have excellent hearing and vision.

Psychological Demands - The Directress is required to make quick decisions, supervise children, and perhaps assistants or volunteers, problem solve, read, write, communicate with parents and speak publicly.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $20.00-$23.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
