About this opportunity:

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Conventional Heavy Oil Geosciences, this position will lead a high functioning team of Geoscientists focused on developing Cenovus’ significant heavy oil resources to improve value through primary and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) development while continuously looking for and assessing new opportunities. This role facilitates the subsurface reservoir characterization, geological & geophysical data acquisition, and the refinement of mapping methods.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead the planning and execution of new well development programs, including IWP direction, appraisal strategy, development sequencing, and observation wells (for EOR optimization), ensuring alignment with engineering and development decisions

  • Oversee stratigraphic well planning, 3D seismic strategy, and future surveillance across the Lloyd heavy oil block, ensuring annual updates to well opportunities, surface pad layouts, and resource estimates to support Cenovus’s 5-year Long-Range Plan

  • Support the optimization of existing EOR floods and evaluate opportunities for expansion and new greenfield EOR plays in collaboration with subsurface and production engineering teams

  • Lead and mentor a multi-disciplinary team in the evaluation, planning, and design of optimal subsurface development strategies

  • Generate scope for base production optimization through redevelopment, redrills, re-completions, and multilateral development within existing fields

  • Handle the redevelopment scope handoff from subsurface to well delivery, working closely with reservoir and asset development teams to ensure opportunity readiness and accretive alignment with business plans

  • Conduct annual program lookbacks to drive continuous improvement in pad development, appraisal efforts, and IWP placement

  • Manage all regulatory, land, and commercial interfaces, including development-related regulatory applications, joint venture partnerships, land sales/swaps, core-up activities, and A&D evaluations across the Conventional Heavy Oil region

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Geology or Geophysics

  • Registered P. Eng and in good standing with APEGA or other Provincial Professional Geoscience Organization

  • Minimum 12 years of experience, with a preference for Conventional Heavy Oil or SAGD experience

  • Advanced level skills in Geoscience Technical Competencies with depth of knowledge of multiple geoscience disciplines

  • Initiative-taking, self-disciplined, and able to demonstrate a high level of productivity

  • Strong organization skills, with the ability to set priorities, follow-up and meet deadlines

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex information concisely to diverse audiences
