Legal Assistant
Purpose of the role:
Using advanced organization and prioritization skills, the legal assistant assists on the various corporate litigation files and administers the practices of several busy lawyers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Preparing, organizing, and managing routine correspondence and administration of all files respecting compliance with guidelines;
- Under lawyer supervision, drafting, proofreading, and filing pleadings, affidavits of records; briefs, factums, and other court documents;
- Maintain Limitation/diary system and monitor file progress, ensuring deadlines are met;
- Communicating with clients;
- Preparation and maintenance of trial binders;
- Assisting in preparation for questioning and trial;
- Draft letters and other correspondence;
- Transcription, time entry, billing, and other administrative duties;
- Coordinating and collaborating with other legal assistants to effectively assist large trial teams;
- Coordinating with other administrative departments, as needed; and
- Other duties and responsibilities as required.
- Legal Assistant Diploma or similar;
- Minimum three years' working experience as a Legal Assistant in Litigation required;
- Familiarity with rules and procedures of different Court levels;
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word, Adobe PDF, and a high typing speed; and
- Experience using software such as iManage, Forte, and Aderant (or similar) preferred.
- Advanced industry knowledge: Knowledgeable and skilled in supporting a Litigation practice.
- Communicates Effectively: Exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels in the organization.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy: Work product is consistently thorough and free of mistakes. Ensures work product is perfected prior to review by the lawyer.
- Organization: Exceptionally effective at planning ahead, organizing, and prioritizing.
- High standards: Establishes and models standards that guarantee exceptional quality and attention to detail. Continually seeking to improve processes and create efficiencies.
