United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College), a national non-profit literacy organization founded in 1899, invites applications for two Literacy Intern positions in Brandon, Manitoba. Position Overview
Literacy Interns will support the delivery of our Reading Tent Summer Literacy Program, a long-standing initiative that promotes reading for fun and skill development among children and families during the summer months. Reading Tents are held at various community sites and include books, storytelling, and creative literacy-based activities.
Interns will work as part of a team to plan, coordinate, and lead literacy activities across Brandon, in collaboration with local partner organizations. The positions report directly to the Community Coordinator.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct outreach to community agencies, summer camps, and youth programs to promote the Reading Tent initiative.
- Schedule site visits and coordinate program logistics.
- Design and deliver age-appropriate and engaging literacy activities for children (ages 1– 12).
- Supervise and support volunteers.
- Maintain accurate program records and support reporting requirements.
- Assist with volunteer recognition and program wrap-up events.
- Represent United for Literacy in a positive and professional manner across community sites.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Must be between 18 and 29 years of age at the start of the program.
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person granted refugee protection.
- Experience working with children, particularly in high-needs communities, is an asset.
- Strong communication, planning, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team. • Creative and enthusiastic about children’s education and literacy.
- Valid driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle is required (travel across Brandon is part of the role).
Additional Assets
- Previous experience with United for Literacy programming.
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
Screening and Selection Process
Selected candidates must successfully complete:
- Virtual interview
- Reference checks (3 references required)
- Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC)
United for Literacy will cover the cost of CRC and VSC (proof of payment required).
