JOB TITLE: Settlement Worker - Employment Counsellor
POSITION STATUS: Part time - Temporary (Non - Union)
SCHEDULE: 15 hours per week - Flexible hours

The Bob Rumball Canadian Centre of Excellence for the Deaf (formerly the Bob Rumball Centre for the Deaf) was the first facility of its kind, and for over 30 years has provided the Deaf Community a space without communication barriers. Within this space an educational, independent living, and a social environment for the Deaf has blossomed. From its starting point as a community recreation facility, the Bob Rumball Centre has expanded into offering a range of specialized services to those within the Deaf Community that require support. These include seniors’, those with developmental, physical, health, or mental health issues, infants and young children, and newcomers to Canada. POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to Manager of Adult Education, the Settlement Worker- Employment Counsellor provides information and advice to Deaf adult immigrants about finding employment that corresponds with their skills and education.
PRIMARY DUTIES
- Prepares short and long term strategies pertaining to specific learner requirements Collects and analyzes labour market information for clients about job opportunities, skill requirements etc.Interviews Learners about their employment history, education background and careers gaol
- Helps Learners with job search strategies, resume writing, preparing for job interviews and strategies for reaching careers goals
- Monitors services used by clients participating in the program and follows-up when necessary
- Provide intervention in employment situations in relation to employee/employer inquiries
- Facilitates workplace accessibility for clients by coordinating instructions in sign language, providing education and technical devices etc.
- Presents workshops and seminars focused on accessibility issues related to employment
- Responds to job requests from employers and initiate daily cold calls to employers to develop job leads for Learners
- Travels to workplaces and potential workplaces to support Learners
- Maintains a professional relationship with stakeholders by acting with respect, dignity and fairness at all times
- Refers Learners requiring additional support to community agencies or other professionals, as needed, with approval from the Manager
- Maintains Learner confidentiality
- Promptly reports breakage or damage of equipment to Managers
- Develops, at minimum, six (6) client workshops per year, with topics chosen based on client interests and market forces
- Initiates, prepares, and participates in workshops for employers and the community on Deaf and hard of hearing issues
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree or diploma in Human Services related field
- Minimum 2 years of experience in employment counselling
- Knowledge of current labour market trends, employment opportunities and social services available in the community
- Excellent knowledge of immigration and various cultural backgrounds
- Fluent in American Sign Language
- Extensive knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf community
- Excellent literacy and computer skills
- Position may transfer to different locations based on business needs
- Valid class G driver’s license, good driving record and access to a working vehicle to travel within the Greater Toronto Area.
